Philadelphia, PA - The Johns Hopkins men's and women's crew teams completed their seasons on May 9-10 by competing at the Dad Vail Regatta.

The Blue Jays capped their successful seasons with impressive showings at the regatta. A JHU women's boat had not made the finals of an event since 1997, but three boats raced in the finals this year. The novice women's four, women's pair, and varsity women's four all advanced to their respective finals.

In Friday's heats, the men's pair of Pat Mason (Milford, CT/Fairfield Prep) and John Cutright (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) finished fifth in a very strong heat, while the varsity men's four of Sten Tullberg (Lexington Park, MD/Great Mills), Joel Carlin (Hyde Park, VT/Lamoille Union), Derek Davies (Elma, NY/St. Joe's Collegiate Institute), Dave Crandall (Springfield, OR/Springfield), and coxswain Terry Dean (Vineland, NJ/St. Augustine) placed second in 7:02.3 to advance to the semifinals.
 

 

The JHU novice men's four of David Small (Leominster, MA/Groton), Vadim Gretchouchkin (New York City, NY/Stayvesant), Peter Ryan (King of Prussia, PA/Upper Merion), and Michael Walsh (Woodbridge, VA/Paul VI Catholic) finished fourth in its heat in 7:33.8 and did not advance.

The Hopkins women had an excellent day on Friday, led by the varsity women's four of Sharon Betz (Bedford, MA/Bedford), Caitlin Hurst (Fort Collins, CO/Pouire), Meredith Clayton (St. Louis, MO/Villa Duchesne), Caroline Hookway (West Boylston, MA/Massachusetts Academy of Math & Science), and coxswain Ariel Lyons-Warren (St. Louis, MO/Ladue Horton Watkins), which won its heat in 7:47.4.

The novice women's four of Manuella Andrade (Mill Valley, CA/Tamalpais), Ellie Glifort (Chugiak, AK/Chugiak), Priscilla Pang (Grand Prairie, TX/Texas Academy of Math & Science), Renee Egusa (Westport, CA/Staples), and coxswain Payal Ghosh (Woodbury, MN/Woodbury) finished second in its heat in 8:04.6 to advance to the semifinals, while the women's pair of Allison McNickle (Villa Park, IL/Willowbrook) and Jamie Planck (Peoria, IL/Richwoods) also advanced to the semis by placing second in 9:07.2 in its heat.

The varsity men's four placed fifth in the semifinals in 6:57.7, finishing ahead of Geneseo in 6:57.8. The three women's boats all finished second in their semifinal races to earn a spot in the afternoon final. The women's pair finished in 8:27.6, the varsity women's four finished in 7:37.1, and the novice women's four finished in 8:12.8.

In an extremely close race, Hopkins finished fourth in the varsity women's four grand final. Bowdoin took the title in 7:40.3, followed by Pittsburgh in 7:44.9, LaSalle in 7:45.0, Hopkins in 7:45.2, Marquette in 7:45.3, and Northwestern in 7:45.4.

The JHU novice women's four also placed fourth in its grand final in 7:53.7. Tennessee-Chattanooga won the race in 7:45.7, followed by Fairfield in 7:48.7, Bowdoin in 7:49.6, Hopkins, Lafayette in 7:53.9, and Carnegie Mellon in 7:53.8.

The women's pair placed sixth in its grand final in 8:53.8, behind Bucknell in 7:53.9, Carnegie Mellon in 8:04.2, Penn State in 8:14.4, Grand Valley in 8:18.6, and Haverford in 8:38.6.
