Hopkins Crew Teams Compete In Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Championships

Lorton, VA - The Johns Hopkins men's single, men's novice heavyweight eight and women's heavyweight four each finished second as the Blue Jay men's and women's crew teams competed in the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Championships on Sunday. Carnegie Mellon took the men's single in 7:52.30, while senior Michael Walsh (Woodbridge, VA/Paul VI Catholic) finished second in 8:26.80 and sophomore Peter Ryan (King of Prussia, PA/Upper Merion) came in third in 8:30.00. Penn State was fourth in 8:34.80 while St. John's (MD) placed fifth in 8:40.30.
Carnegie Mellon also won the men's pair in 7:01.73, while St. John's was second in 7:19.60. The Hopkins boat of junior Dave Small (Leominster, MA/Groton) and senior Derek Davies (Elma, NY/St. Joe's Collegiate Institute) came in third in 7:37.10, ahead of Mary Washington in 7:40.20 and Penn State in 8:03.30.
The JHU men's novice heavyweight boat of sophomore Sean Cheng (Newburyport, MA/Newburyport), Tim Park, freshman Teddy Drivas (New York City, NY/Stuyvesant), freshman Greg Kearns (Norristown, PA/St. Paul's), freshman Wesley Fredericks (New Canann, CT/New Canaan), Bobby Mattina, freshman Lukasz Bugaj (Kalamazoo, MI/Portage Northern), sophomore Matt Hart (Tampa, FL/Berkeley Prep) and senior coxswain Michael Vu (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) won its heat in 6:30.50, finishing ahead of Virginia Tech in 6:37.80, American in 6:44.80, Maryland in 6:48.50 and George Mason in 6:54.00. Loyola won the final in 6:20.00, while the Blue Jays finished second in 6:26.10. William & Mary was third in 6:30.80, Virginia Tech came in fourth in 6:38.10, Virginia Commonwealth was fifth in 6:50.30 and American placed sixth in 6:55.10. The JHU women's heavyweight four of freshman Laura DeMare (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield), sophomore Angela Ko (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro North), senior Allison McNickle (Villa Park, IL/Willowbrook), junior Caroline Hookway (West Boylston, MA/Massachusetts Academy of Math & Science) and freshman coxswain Virginia Pearson (Miami, FL/Miami Palmetto) finished second in its final in 8:10.20. UMBC won the race in 8:08.00, followed by Hopkins, La Salle in 8:14.40 and Maryland in 8:22.50. The Blue Jay women's lightweight four of sophomore Renee Egusa (Westport, CT/Staples), freshman Theresa Keating (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow), sophomore Payal Ghosh (Woodbury, MN/Woodbury), sophomore Eleanor Glifort (Chugiak, AK/Chugiak) and junior coxswain Ariel Lyons-Warren (St. Louis, MO/Ladue) placed third in its final in 7:57.40, behind Carnegie Mellon in 7:46.40 and Catholic in 7:56.50. Maryland was fourth in 8:04.50 while American came in fifth in 8:29.70. Hopkins concludes their season Friday and Saturday when the Blue Jays compete at the Dad Vail Regatta on the Schykill River in Philadelphia, PA. -30- |
