Chestertown, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's and women's crew teams totaled 41 points to finish second at the 11th Annual Caspersen Cup Saturday on the Chester River.

The Washington College won the cup with 47 points, while St. John's (MD) was third with 37 points.

The Blue Jay men's varsity eight of sophomore Peter Ryan (King of Prussia, PA/Upper Merion), junior John Cutright (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis), senior Pat Mason (Milford, CT/Fairfield Prep), senior Derek Davies (Elma, NY/St. Joe's Collegiate Institute), junior Dave Small (Leominster, MA/Groton), Robert Mattina, freshman Wesley Fredericks (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan), sophomore Garrett Butler (Ridgeley, WV/Frankfort) and senior coxswain Terry Dean (Vineland, NJ/St. Augustine) was the lone Hopkins boat to win its race. Hopkins finished in 5:50.03, ahead of Washington in 6:02.95 and St. John's in 6:06.09.
 

 

The men's varsity four of Small, Mattina, Fredericks, Butler and freshman coxswain Rachel Raskob (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) finished second in its race in 6:31.23. The Washington "A" boat won the event in 6:11.94, followed by Hopkins, St. John's in 6:38.92, and the Washington "B" boat in 7:01.32. The men's lightweight four of Ryan, senior Michael Walsh (Woodbridge, VA/Paul VI Catholic), Mason, Davies and coxswain Dean was also second in its race in 6:30.05, finishing behind the Shoremen, who took the event in 6:25.3.

Washington also won the men's novice four in 6:37.14, while the JHU "A" boat of freshman Steven Flores (McAllen, TX/The Science Academy), freshman Teddy Drivas (New York City, NY/Stuyvesant), freshman Lukasz Bugaj (Kalamazoo, MI/Portage Northern), sophomore Matt Hart (Tampa, FL/Berkeley Prep) and senior coxswain Michael Vu (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) finished second in 6:41.58. St. John's placed third in 6:51.98, while the Hopkins "B" boat of sophomore David Chiou (Fairfax, VA/Fairfax), Tim Park, Erik Anderson, sophomore Sean Cheng (Newburyport, MA/Newburyport) and freshman coxswain Barry Tong (Napa, CA/Vintage) was fourth in 7:29.00.

St. John's took the men's pair, while Washington was second and the Blue Jay boat of freshman Greg Kearns (Norristown, PA/St. Paul's) and junior Alex Forman (Denver, CO/George Washington) finished third.

Senior Allison McNickle (Villa Park, IL/Willowbrook) finished second in the women's single in 8:14.7, behind St. John's in 7:54.2.

The Washington "A" boat took the women's varsity four race n 6:47.98, while the Hopkins "A" boat of freshman Laura DeMare (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield), sophomore Angela Ko (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro North), junior Caroline Hookway (West Boylston, MA/Massachusetts Academy of Math & Science), senior Caitlin Hurst (Fort Collins, CO/Poudre) and freshman coxswain Virginia Pearson (Miami, FL/Miami Palmetto) came in second in 7:04.12. The Blue Jay "B" boat of sophomore Renee Egusa (Westport, CT/Staples), freshman Theresa Keating (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow), McNickle, sophomore Eleanor Glifort (Chugiak, AK/Chugiak) and junior coxswain Ariel Lyons-Warren (St. Louis, MO/Ladue) placed third in 7:04.12, and the Washington "B" boat finished fourth in 7:37.4.

The Shorewomen took the first two spots in the women's varsity eight race, as the Washington "A" boat finished in 6:20.55 while the "B" boat finished in 6:34.89. The Hopkins boat of Keating, sophomore Payal Ghosh (Woodbury, MN/Woodbury), DeMare, Hurst, Hookway, Ko, Egusa, Glifort and coxswain Pearson placed third in 6:46.12.

The Blue Jays return to action on Sunday, April 4 when Hopkins competes in the Occoquan Sprints in Lorton, VA.
