Augusta, GA - The Johns Hopkins men's and women's crew teams opened their 2004 seasons by competing in the Aiken-Augusta Spring Regatta last Saturday.

After advancing in the morning heats, the women's heavyweight four of junior Caitlin Hurst (Fort Collins, CO/Poudre), junior Caroline Hookway (West Boylston, MA/Massachusetts Academy of Math and Science), sophomore Angela Ko (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro North), freshman Laura DeMare (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) and freshman coxswain Virginia Pearson (Miami, FL/Miami Palmetto) finished third in the afternoon final in 8:41.5. Colgate won the race in 8:20.4, followed by Georgia Tech "A" in 8:28.8, Hopkins, Georgia Tech "B" in 9:04.8, Clemson in 9:06.0 and Virginia Tech in 9:10.0.

The men's heavyweight four of sophomore Garrett Butler (Ridgeley, WV/Frankfort), freshman Wesley Fredericks (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan), Bobby Mattina, junior Dave Small (Leominster, MA/Groton) and freshman coxswain Rachel Raskob (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) also advanced to the afternoon final, placing sixth in 8:06.2. Virginia Tech took the final in 7:38.2, following by Alabama in 7:49.4, College of Charleston in 7:51.5, Clemson in 7:53.9, Georgia Tech in 8:00.1 and the Blue Jays.

The men's varsity pair of junior Alex Forman (Denver, CO/George Washington) and junior John Cutright (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) won its race in 9:21.4, defeating the University of Tampa in 9:24.7. The men's novice four and varsity eight of Butler, Mattina, Fredericks, Small, Cutright, senior Derek Davies (Elma, NY/St. Joe's Collegiate Institute), senior Pat Mason (Milford, CT/Fairfield Prep), sophomore Peter Ryan (King of Prussia, PA/Upper Merion) and senior coxswain Terry Dean (Vineland, NJ/St. Augustine) failed to advance to the afternoon finals.
 

 

The women's lightweight four of sophomore Eleanor Glifort (Chugiak, AK/Chugiak), senior Allison McNickle (Villa Park, IL/Willowbrook), freshman Theresa Keating (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow), sophomore Payal Ghosh (Woodbury, MN/Woodbury) and junior coxswain Ariel Lyons-Warren (St. Louis, MO/Ladue) won its event in 8:58.1, finishing ahead of Alabama in 9:18.1, North Carolina State in 10:07.0 and Auburn in 10:11.2. The men's lightweight four of Davies, Mason, Ryan, senior Michael Walsh (Woodbridge, VA/Paul VI Catholic) and coxswain Dean finished third in its final in 8:10.4. Duke won the final in 7:40.4, followed by Clemson in 8:01.5, Hopkins, Tampa in 8:26.9, Vanderbilt in 8:28.5 and Berry in 8:38.2.

The Blue Jays will compete in the Caspersen Cup with Washington College and St. John's (MD) this Saturday in Chestertown, MD.
