Steve Perry enters his 19th season as the head coach of the Johns Hopkins men's and women's varsity crew teams. Perry took the helm of the Blue Jay rowing program in 1989, building it from a club sport to a highly-competitive varsity program.
In just his first season as head coach, the 1989 men's Lightweight Four with Coxswain won a gold medal at the Dad Vail Regatta and went on to compete at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta in Henley, England. In 1994, the Women's Four and Men's Lightweight Four boats captured silver medals at Dad Vail, and in 1995, the Women's Pair won gold and the Men's Lightweight Four took bronze.
In 1997, the Men's Lightweight Four won a bronze medal at Dad Vail, while the Women's Four with Coxswain earned a silver medal. Nationally-ranked all spring, the Women's Four with Coxswain crew was invited to compete in the inaugural NCAA Women's Rowing Championships, where they finished 12th overall.
The 2000 season saw the Blue Jays duplicate their 1999 success with many outstanding performances. The Men's Varsity Lightweight Eight once again earned a bronze medal at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta, while the Women's Varsity Eight garnered a silver medal at the Mid.-Atlantic Championships for the second straight year. In addition, the women's V8+ ended the season ranked No. 10 nationally for its first ever top-10 finish.
In 2001 the women's varsity eights were ranked as high as No. 8 in the USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Poll, and last season the Blue Jays tied for first place at the Caspersen Cup. Numerous JHU crew members have been named CRCA Scholar-Athletes, and in the spring of 2002 J. Dawn Waters was named to the Verizon Academic All-America District II Spring At-Large Team.
A 1980 graduate of Washington College, Perry rowed for the Shoremen for four years as an undergraduate. In 1991, he was honored for distinguished service to crew by the Washington College Rowing Association. Perry also founded the Loyola College crew team, was a founding member and served as president of the Baltimore Rowing Club from 1983-85.
Still an active master sculler, Perry competes in several East Coast master regattas. He won a bronze medal in the Men's Lightweight Intermediate Double at the National Club Rowing Championships in 1994. Perry is also a master swimmer.
A C.P.A. with a master's degree in taxation, Perry and his wife Ellen reside in Lutherville, Maryland. They have three children: Caroline, Maura, and Conor.
