Joel Carlin joins the Hopkins coaching staff after two years as an assistant coach at Loyola College. At Loyola, Carlin was responsible for both the men's and women's freshman crews. He helped lead the women's team to consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships (MAAC) in 2004 and 2005, constituting their first ever MAAC titles. Under Carlin's direction, the Freshmen Men's Eight recorded the crew's best record to date, including several medal performances in 2004. The men also finished second in the MAAC Championships in 2005.
Prior to beginning his coaching career, Carlin was a four-year letterwinner on the varsity Hopkins crew team. Although he had no previous rowing experience, Carlin qualified for the varsity squad as a freshman and went on to become captain of the men's team during his junior and senior years. He is a medalist at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta and an accomplished sculler.
A native of Hyde Park, Vermont, Carlin earned his bachelor's degree from Hopkins in 2003. He is a certified ACE Personal Trainer, a spinning instructor, and an USRowing Level II Certified Coach, as well as an avid cyclist and cross-country skier.
