Johns Hopkins Men's Basketball Weekly Notes
Nov. 20, 2008
Complete Release in PDF Format Tipping Off: Johns Hopkins opens its 84th season of basketball with the 18th annual Blue Jay Invitational. It will be no easy task this year as JHU welcomes NCAA Tourney teams Whitworth and Moravian and ECAC Upstate NY Champion Brockport to Goldfarb Gym. For the first time since 2001, Hopkins is not the defending champion of the Blue Jay Invitational after falling in overtime to Richard Stockton in the 2007 title game. Blue Jay Invitational History: Hopkins has won 12 of 17 Blue Jay Invitational titles, including five straight from 2002 to 2006. Danny Nawrocki ‘07 is the only three-time MVP in the 17-year history of the tournament. A Look Back: Despite the loss of five seniors, Johns Hopkins posted its 13th consecutive winning season in 2007-08. The Blue Jays went 16-10 overall and 12-6 in the Centennial Conference. Hopkins advanced to the Centennial Conference Tournament for the sixth consecutive season, falling in the semifinals. These are the Facts: The 2008-09 season marks the 84th season of men’s basketball for Johns Hopkins. The Blue Jays enter this weekend with an all-time record of 798-903-1 (.469). JHU has won four conference tournament titles (two Centennial, two MAC) and made nine NCAA Tournament appearances. A Look Ahead: Hopkins hits the road on Tuesday to take on Frostburg State in the opening round of the fourth annual Provident Pride of Maryland Tournament. The Blue Jays will then travel to nearby Stevenson University (formerly Villa Julie College) for the final two rounds on Saturday, Nov. 29 and Sunday, Nov. 30. Countdown to 800: The Blue Jays enter the Blue Jay Invitational just two wins shy of the 800th win in program history. Hopkins is 798-903-1 (.469) all-time. Series History: JHU and Moravian have met just six times in the history of the two programs with Friday night’s match-up the first meeting in 16 seasons. The Blue Jays lead the series 4-2 and won the last meeting 76-65 on Nov. 21, 1992. That last meeting between the Blue Jays and the Greyhounds was in the 1992 Blue Jay Invitational championship game. A Saturday match-up with Brockport would be the first ever meeting between the two programs. Likewise, Hopkins and Whitworth have never met on the hardwood. On the Bench: Head coach Bill Nelson is in his 23rd season on the Blue Jay bench. The longest tenured coach in program history, he is also the winningest with a 368-209 (.638) record. Nelson has coached Hopkins to 15+ wins in each of the last three seasons and 11 of the last 12. Hopkins has won two Centennial Conference titles and made eight NCAA Tournament appearances, including five straight from 1990-1994, during his tenure. Nelson is the second longest tenured coach in the Centennial Conference behind Franklin & Marshall’s Glenn Robinson. 317 and Counting: Johns Hopkins has made a three-point field goal in 317 consecutive games. The streak began on Feb. 17, 1996 and is the 10th longest active streak in all of NCAA Division III. The University of Puget Sound boasts the longest active streak in the nation at 503 consecutive games, breaking the previous record of 500 held by Salisbury (1986-2006). Oh Captain, My Captain: Seniors Collin Kamm, Ryan Purcell and Scott Weisenfeld will captain the Blue Jays in 2008-09. Kamm ranked fifth in the Centennial Conference in assist-to-turnover ratio (+1.25) last season. He dished 65 assists on the year while averaging 7.6 points per game on 50.7 percent shooting. Weisenfeld racked up 62 assists last season as well as 28 steals. He shot 45.8 percent from the field and 74.0 percent from the line. Purcell provides a spark off the bench as he shoots 54.2 percent from three-point range for his career. Coaches’ Pick: Johns Hopkins has been picked to finish fourth in the Centennial Conference in 2008-09 in a poll of the conference’s coaches and Sports Information Directors. The Blue Jays garnered 107 total points.
