THE WEEK IN REVIEW... The Johns Hopkins men's basketball team opened its 83rd season with an 81-73 win over Carnegie Mellon in the opening round of the 17th annual Blue Jay Invitationa. It is the sixth consecutive season that the Blue Jays opened with a win. Senior guard Doug Polster put up a career high 26 points in the win, while going 10-of-11 from the charity stripe. Hopkins then suffered a 78-74 overtime loss to Richard Stockton in the championship game of the Blue Jay Invitational. Sophomore guard Pat O'Connell led the team with a career-high 19 points, while sophomore forward Adam Baumgartner had a career and team high nine boards in the loss. O'Connell and Polster earned all-tournament team honors. It is the first loss for Hopkins in the title game since 2000. The Blue Jays won five consecutive titles from 2002 to 2006. THE WEEK AHEAD... Johns Hopkins opens the defense of its 2006 Provident Pride of Maryland title on Tuesday at Hood. It will be the first ever meeting between the Blue Jays and the Blazers. I'M HONORED... Sophomore guard Pat O'Connell was named to both the Centennial Conference and the PrestoSports/Pride of Maryland Honor Roll this week. He averaged 16.5 points and 2.5 rebounds per game at the Blue Jay Invitational to earn all-tournament honors. he shot 63.2 percent from the floor, including 100 percent from behind the arc. He was also 5-of-7 from the charity stripe. THE PRIDE OF MARYLAND... Hopkins will the final two rounds of the third annual Provident Pride of Maryland Tournament on Satuday and Sunday at Goldfarb Gym. With a win on Tuesday, Hopkins will face the winner of the St. Mary's-Washington game at 8:00 pm on Saturday. A loss, and the Blue Jays will take on the loser of that Seahawks-Shoremen game at 3:45 on Saturday. Hopkins won the 2006 title by defeating Salisbury 71-60. Villa Julie won the inaugural tournament in 2005 with an 81-78 overtime win over Hopkins. IT'S A NEW SEASON... Johns Hopkins is in its 83rd season of basketball and posts an all-time record of 783-891-1 (467). The Blue Jays also post a Centennial Conference record of 138-64 (.683). Hopkins ranks second behind Franklin & Marshall (152) for most conference wins. CHARITY STRIPE... The Blue Jays had four players shoot more than 70.0 percent from the line last weekend at the Blue Jay Invitational, including senior guard Doug Polster who went 15-of-16 from the line. COACH NELSON... Head coach Bill Nelson, now in his 22nd season with the Blue Jays, is the winningest coach in program history. He posts a 353-200 (.638) record entering this week's action. Nelson ranks second in Centennial Conference history in conference wins (138), conference tournament wins (9) and NCAA Tournament wins (5). COACHES' PICK... The Blue Jays were picked to finish fourth in the Centennial Conference in the coaches' preseason poll. Hopkins received 111 points and was the only team in the top-five to not receive a first place vote. MOVING ON UP... Senior guard Doug Polster is moving up the ranks in the Hopkins record book for career three-point field goals made and attempted. He enters this week with 191 attempts and ranking 14th all-time. Polster has nailed 77 treys and now ranks tied for 11th all-time. He entered the season ranked third in JHU history in three-point percentage with a 41.9 percent clip.
