Feb. 21, 2007 BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins senior forward Matt Griffin (Glen Mills, PA/Penncrest) has been named a finalist for the prestigious Jostens Trophy as announced Wednesday. He is the first male or female basketball player from Hopkins to be a finalist for the Jostens. The Jostens Trophy is a national award created by the Rotary Club of Salem, VA, to honor the most outstanding men and women's DIII basketball players of the year. The award takes into account three vital parts: basketball ability, academic prowess and community service. The trophy models the Rotary motto of "Service above Self" by recognizing those who truly fit the ideal of the well-rounded Division III student-athlete. The awards presentation is scheduled for Thursday, March 15 at the Salem Civic Center in conjunction with the Men's Division III Championship being hosted in Salem, VA on March 16-17. Griffin leads the Blue Jays and ranks third in the Centennial Conference with 17.0 points per game. He is shooting a league-best 63.9 percent from the floor, which ranks ninth in the NCAA. His 83.5 percent clip from the free throw line also leads the Centennial. He has scored 20 or more points in nine of the Blue Jays last 13 games. A double major in philosophy and psychology, Griffin has already completed his degree requirements with a 3.45 GPA. A two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree, he is a member of Psi Chi, the National Honors Society of Psychology and is currently interning at Johns Hopkins Hospital on a cognitive behavioral study. As a sophomore, volunteered in the adolescent ward at Sheppard-Pratt Mental Hospital, supervised group therapy sessions and taught life skills lesson plan.
