THE WEEK IN REVIEW... Johns Hopkins is tied for fourth in the Centennial Conference after a 1-1 week. The Blue Jays are now 10-7 overall and are 4-1 in their last five outings. On Wednesday, the Blue Jays lost at home, for just the second time this season, falling 59-56 to the visiting McDaniel Green Terror. Hopkins was leading 28-24 at the half, but McDaniel shot a 60.0 percent from the floor in the second, outscoring JHU 35-28 to take the win. SophoSomore guard Pat O'Connell led the Blue Jays with 15 points and three steals. On Saturday, it was Hopkins turn for a strong second half. With the game tied at 30 apiece just 41 seconds into the second half, the Blue Jays went on a 19-2 run to break open the game and eventually defeat the Dickinson Red Devils 74-53. Four players scored in double figures led by senior guard Doug Polster with 16. Sophomore forward Andrew Farber-Miller had his second career double-double with 12 points (including a dunk during the 19-2 run) and 10 boards. THE WEEK AHEAD... Johns Hopkins faces opposite ends of the spectrum this week. On Wednesday, the Blue Jays travel to Chestertown to take on last-place the Washington College Shoremen. On Saturday, first-place Ursinus visits Goldfarb Gym. The series between Hopkins and Washington began in 1927-78, with the Blue Jays leading 63-53. Hopkins has won the last five meetings, including a 69-52 win on November 24 in the Provident Pride of Maryland Tournament. Against Ursinus, Hopkins has a slight lead in the series, 40-35. The Bears won the first meeting this season in 62-57 in Collegeville, PA.The Blue Jays swept the season series last year, ending a four-game losing streak to the Bears. COUNTDOWN TO 800... Johns Hopkins is just eight wins shy of hitting the 800-win mark. This is the 83rd season of basketball at Hopkins and the Blue Jays post an all-time record of 792-897-1 (.469). The Blue Jays also post a Centennial Conference record of 144-68 (.679), ranking second behind Franklin & Marshall (157) for most conference wins. LAST FIVE... The Blue Jays are 4-1 in their last five meetings, including two overtime thrillers. Three players are scoring in double figures during this stretch, sophomore guard Pat O'Connell, senior guard Doug Polster and sophomore forward Andrew Farber-Miller. O'Connell leads the way averaging 15.8 points per game, while shooting 56.1 percent from the floor. Farber-Miller leads the team with 8.6 rebounds per game. Hopkins opponents are averaging 17.4 turnovers per game and shooting under 40 percent from the floor. In addition, the Blue Jays are outscoring their opponents by 8.8 points per game, while also winning the battle of the boards (+3.2 rpg). 300 AND COUNTING... Johns Hopkins has some outstanding three-point shooters in its history. In fact, JHU has hit atleast one three-pointer in 308 consecutive games. A streak that dates back to February 17, 1996. It is the 11th longest active streak in NCAA Division III. Salisbury holds the record for consecutive games with a three-point basket - 500 - from 1986-2006. Senior guard Doug Polster had his streak of consecutive games with a trey snapped at 18 in Wednesday's loss to McDaniel. That streak dated back to February 25, 2007. Polster got back on track on Saturday, hitting 4-of-8 from downtown. T.J. Valerio `07 holds the individual record for consecutive games with a three-pointer. He hit a trey in 35 straight games, a stretch from January 8, 2005 to February 1, 2006. NO SOPHOMORE SLUMP.. After seeing limited playing time in their rookie seasons, Adam Baumgartner and Andrew Farber-Miller are having solid sophomore campaigns. Farber-Miller grabbed his second double-double of the season on Saturday, punching up 12 points (4-5 FG, 4-4 FT) with 10 boards. On the season, he's third on the team with 9.4 points and second with 6.0 rebounds per game. He's shooting 47.9 percent from the floor and 78.3 percent from the free throw line. In the triple-overtime win over Muhlenberg on January 16, Farber-Miller played a school-record 49 minutes, including the final 24 minutes of the game. Baumgartner averages 4.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. He ranks third on the team in blocks (7) and is shooting 42.4 percent from the field. PICKPOCKET... Junior guard Collin Kamm broke a school record in the win against Eastern in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. He had nine steals, including six in the first half, breaking the program single-game record of seven - held by both Dave Wilson (02-05-1986) and Bill Zahn (11-27-1989). Kamm's nine steals are also tied for the third most in Centennial Conference history. For the season, Kamm has 32 steals, tying his career-high. As a team, Johns Hopkins had 15 steals in the win over Eastern - the most in a game in exactly seven years. The Blue Jays last had 15 steals in a game on January 5, 2001 in a 67-50 win over New York University. FREE BASKETBALL... Johns Hopkins played back-to-back overtime games on January 16 and 19, for a total of 25 extra minutes of basketball that week. On the season, the Blue Jays have gone to overtime four times and are 3-1 in those games. JHU lost its first overtime game of the season, 78-74 to Richard Stockton, but has won the last three. Hopkins last played back-to-back overtime games on November 20 & 23, 1999. That season, the Blue Jays played a school-record six overtime games (3-3). COACH NELSON... Head coach Bill Nelson, now in his 22nd season with the Blue Jays, is the winningest coach in program history. He posts a 362-206 (.637) record entering this week's action. Nelson ranks second in Centennial Conference history in conference wins (144), conference tournament wins (9) and NCAA Tournament wins (5). MOVING ON UP... Senior guard Doug Polster is moving up the ranks in the Johns Hopkins record book for career three-point field goals made and attempted. He enters this week with 307 attempts and ranking ninth all-time. Polster has nailed 116 treys and is now tied for seventh all-time. Polster entered the season ranked third in JHU history in three-point percentage with a 41.9 percent clip. Also making a move in the Hopkins record book is senior forward Kevin Roach. He enter's this week with 205 career rebounds, ranking 21st all-time. Roach also has 43 career blocks, which is tied for 16th in school history. AROUND THE CENTENNIAL... Senior guard Doug Polster leads the Centennial in three-point field goals (2.71), while ranking sixth in free throw percentage (.812) and eighth in scoring (14.5). Sophomore forward Andrew Farber-Miller is sixth in offensive rebounds (2.41). Sophomore guard Pat O'Connell ranks fourth in three point percentage (.488) and tied for sixth in steals (1.88). Junior guard Scott Weisenfeld is second in assist/turnover ratio (1.38) and sixh in assists (2.93), while senior forward Kevin Roach ranks fifth in blocks (1.12). Junior guard Collin Kamm is tied for sixth in steals (1.88). Sophomore forward Adam Baumgartner ranks eighth in offensive boards (2.00). As a team, the Blue Jays rank second in free throw percentage (.720), three-point percentage defense (.310) and turnover margin (+1.88), third in field goal percentage defense (.411), fourth in three-point percentage (.362), scoring defense (65.4), scoring margin (+3.9), steals (8.76) and blocks (3.06). CHARITY STRIPE... The Blue Jays have six players who are shooting better than 65.0 percent from the charity stripe this season. In fact, four of those six are shooting better than 75.0 percent. Senior Doug Polster leads the team, connecting on 81.2 percent of his shots from the free throw line. In the Blue Jays triple-overtime win against Muhlenberg, the team broke school records for free throw attempts (57) and free throws made (46). COACHES' PICK... The Blue Jays were picked to finish fourth in the Centennial Conference in the coaches' preseason poll. Hopkins received 111 points and was the only team in the top-five to not receive a first place vote. Ursinus is the conference preseason favorite, earning seven first place votes and 137 points.
