Balanced Attack Leads Johns Hopkins to 75-53 Win over Stevenson
Nov. 20, 2009
BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's basketball team used a balanced attack to defeat visiting Stevenson, 75-53, in the opening round of the Pride of Maryland Championship presented by M&T Bank Friday night in Goldfarb Gym. The Blue Jays, playing in their season opener, got points from 13 different players while seniors Andrew Farber-Miller (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne's-Belfield) and Pat O'Connell (Baltimore, MD/Loyola Blakefield) each punched up a double-double. It is the eighth straight season that Hopkins has opened the season with a win. The Blue Jays looked to be in control early, pushing out to a 10-0 lead while holding the Mustangs scoreless for nearly five minutes to open the contest. Hopkins would outscore Stevenson 16-6 over the first 10 minutes, before the visitors began chipping away. Jason Scroggins hit three free throws after getting fouled on a shot from just in front of the Hopkins' bench. That started a 10-0 run for the Mustangs, capped by a pair of Irvin Jones' free throws, as Stevenson evened the game at 16-16 with 5:11 to play. Hopkins came right back, as Farber-Miller sandwiched a pair of buckets around a lay-up from freshman Adam Spengler (Colts Neck, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy), to ignite an 18-3 run that stretched into the second half. Junior Mike Henrici (Wayne, PA/Conestoga) closed out the half with a jumper to give the Blue Jays a 27-19 lead at the break. Coming out of the half, Hopkins picked up where it left off, with a jumper from O'Connell, pushing its lead to double-digits at 29-19. The Blue Jays didn't look back from there, pushing their lead to as many as 31 points, midway through the half. Hopkins' lead never dipped below 13 points in the second as the Blue Jays shot 54.8 percent from the floor after shooting just 28.6 percent in the first.
Farber-Miller scored a game-high 14 points, while also pulling 11 boards, to pace the Blue Jays. O'Connell finished with 10 points and 10 boards, to go along with a game-high four assists and five steals. It is the first time since December 2, 2006 that Hopkins had a pair of players with 10 or more rebounds in the same game. Getting their first career points for the Blue Jays were Spengler, freshmen Mike Rhoads (Huntingdon Valley, PA/Chestnut Hill Academy), Peter Scanlon (Centreville, VA/Westfield), Alex Pandrangi (Westlake, OH/Westlake) and Sean Wildes (Massapequa Park, NY/Chaminade). Hopkins was dominant on the boards, outrebounding Stevenson 55-32. The Blue Jays' 55 total rebounds are just three shy of the tournament single-game record, while their 35 defensive boards are just four shy of the record. The Hopkins' defense held Stevenson to just 27.5 percent from the floor for the game, as the Mustangs didn't have a player finish in double figures. JHU advances to the championship bracket of the Pride of Maryland and will face the winner of Hood-Washington College at 6:00 pm on Saturday at Goucher College. |
