FREDERICK, MD - Junior Phil Beggans (Ocean, NJ/Ocean Township) scored 17 points but it was not enough as Johns Hopkins fell 52-43 at Hood on Tuesday night in the opening round of the third annual Provident Pride of Maryland Tournament. The Blue Jays (1-2) will now face the Washington College Shoremen at 3:45 pm on Saturday in the consolation bracket at Goldfarb Gym.
The first half was a story of runs as the Blue Jays jumped out to a 6-2 lead on a lay-up by sophomore Adam Baumgartner (Reston, VA/Bishop O'Connell) and a trey from senior Doug Polster (Bernardsville, NJ/Bernards). A free throw from Jess Gutekunst and a pair of back-to-back buckets by Ryan Junghans pushed the Blazers ahead 7-6. Rian McHenry hit a lay-up and then Jeff Willison followed with a pair of lay-ups and Hood's lead was seven with 11:24 to play in the half.
It was Hopkins turn to rally. Beggans hit from downtown to cut it to four, but Anthony Bennett answered with a bucket for the Blazers. The Blue Jays came right back with jumpers from Baumgartner and senior Kevin Roach (Derwood, MD/Colonel Zadok Magruder). Roach then hit a pair of free throws and the game was tied at 15-15 with 5:18 to play. It was back-and-forth until the buzzer with Gutekunst hitting a pair from the line to give Hood a 20-19 lead at the half.
Gutenkust hit a trey to start the second half and Hood led by four. But buckets from Baumgartner and Kamm tied the game for the fifth time at 23-23. Junghans answered with a bucket to give the Blazers a two-point lead that they would not relinquish. In the final 11 minutes of the game, Hood made just two lay-ups while hitting on 10-of-16 free throw attempts.
Beggans grabbed a career-high eight rebounds to go with his team-high 17 points. Gutenkust led the Blazers with 18 points and 17 rebounds. Junghans also hit in double-figures, scoring 12 points on the night.
