Jan. 5, 2008
YORK, PA - Johns Hopkins (6-5) converted 19 of 22 free throws in the final 11 minutes as the Blue Jays defeated the Eastern Eagles (3-6) 71-62 in the consolation game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic presented by Best Western Saturday afternoon. Junior guard Collin Kamm (Avon, NJ/Saint Rose) broke a school record with nine steals in the game, falling just one steal shy of a double-double after scoring 10 points. The first nine minutes of the game was a back and forth affair as the lead changed hands seven times with four ties. The Blue Jays trailed 18-15 with 10:58 to play in the half after back-to-back lay-ups from Eastern's Joe Manzo. Senior guard Doug Polster (Bernardsville, NJ/Bernards) then hit a trey to tie the game at 18, igniting a 21-7 Blue Jays' run over the next seven minutes. Seven different Blue Jays scored in the run, as Polster leaded the way with a pair of threes. Eastern tried chipping away at Johns Hopkins' lead, cutting the deficit to seven points on a Ty Coleman lay-up and free throws from Matt Malloy and Manzo with 1:17 to play in the half. But Kamm came back with a pair of free throws and the Blue Jays took a 38-29 lead into the break. JHU came out of the break with an 8-3 run, pushing out to a 46-32 lead with more than 16 minutes to play. The Eagles would not go away, answering with a 10-2 run to cut the lead down to just six. The fouls began to pile up after that for Eastern as Hopkins would go to the line 22 times over the final 11:18 of the game, converting 19 of those to take the win. Sophomore Andrew Farber-Miller (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne's-Belfield) tied his career-high with 15 points to lead Hopkins. He was a perfect 11-of-11 from the charity stripe and also grabbed seven boards. Polster also scored in double figures, punching up 14 points, including eight from the free throw line), with Kamm adding 10 points and five assists. Manzo paced the Eagles with a game-high 16 points.
For the game, JHU was 28-of-33 from the free throw line, while Eastern went just 12-of-19. The Blue Jays also had 15 steals, while forcing a total of 25 Eagles' turnovers. Johns Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, January 9 with a men's and women's double-header at Ursinus. The men will tip-off at 8:00 pm from Helfferich Hall in Collegeville, PA.
