The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins men's basketball team held visiting Goucher to just 45 points and 26 percent shooting in a 73-45 win over the Gophers Wednesday night.
How it Happened
Both teams struggled from the field early as Hopkins led just 7-4 at the 12:58-mark of the first half. The Blue Jays got things going with three straight threes in an 81-second span to quickly push their lead to 12. The lead would not dip into single digits for the remainder of the game.
Devon Esslinger and Jacob Smith then sandwiched buckets around a Daniel Vila dunk and JHU was up 18-8 with 3:56 to play in the first. Freshmen Chris Groetsch and Joey Kern answered with back-to-back triples and just like that the lead was 16.
Elliott Wiley followed with a bucket from downtown for the Gophers but Joey Fitzpatrick came back with a drive and score to make it a 26-11 game. Smith had the final say of the half however, scoring on a pull-up jumper with 1:16 to go to make it a 13-point game at the break.
The teams came out of the half trading scores and the Blue Jays led 30-19 at the 17:00-mark. Junior Michael Gardner hit a three to spark a 10-0 run that saw the lead balloon to 21 just three minutes later. The lead went up and down over the next four minutes, wavering between 20 and 23 points.
Goucher would pull within 16 with 9:08 to go with a quick five unanswered points. Less than two minutes later, the lead was back over 20 and would stay that way. In fact, Hopkins pushed its lead to as many as 31 points in the final seven minutes.
