Nov. 20, 2008

BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins head baseball coach Bob Babb announced the appointment of alumnus Matt Righter to an assistant baseball coaching position. Righter will focus on the development of the Blue Jay pitching staff.

Righter, a four-year standout (2000-2004) at JHU, joins the Hopkins coaching staff after completing several stints with minor league baseball teams. He was drafted by the Detriot Tigers following his senior season and went on to play for the Oneonta Tigers, the West Michigan Whitecaps, the Lakeland Flying Tigers and the Erie Seawolves. Righter ended his minor league career in 2008 after brief stint with the Toledo Mudhens.

"I am pleased to have Matt as our new pitching coach as he just finished five years of minor league baseball where he worked with pitching coaches at numerous levels," said head coach Bob Babb. "This experience has helped Matt formulate a pitching philosophy which the two of us believe in and which should help our pitchers develop. In addition, he demonstrated a terrific relationship with our hurlers this fall."

Righter earned a degree in international relations for Johns Hopkins in 2004 and is expecting to finish his MBA from the University of Phoenix in the summer of 2009. He will assist a squad that made a run to the College World Series a year ago.
