Long-Time Assistant Baseball Coach Jack Newell Announces Retirement
Sept. 9, 2008
BALTIMORE, MD -- Jack Newell, longtime assistant baseball coach at Johns Hopkins, has announced his retirement. Newell has served as head coach Robert Babb's main assistant for the past 14 years, a period during which the Blue Jays ranked as one of the top teams in the nation. The 2008 squad finished second in the nation, falling in the national championship game in the bottom of the ninth inning. Newell has been in charge of the Blue Jay pitching staff for the past several years, directing a group that has been ranked among the top ten in the nation in numerous national statistical categories.
"Jack has been a tremendous asset to Johns Hopkins University and the baseball program," Babb stated. "It will feel odd taking the field without him, but I'm sure he'll be around regularly. I can't thank Jack enough for his efforts, expertise and loyalty over the past fourteen years."
The success of the Johns Hopkins baseball program since Newell arrived for the 1995 season is unparalleled in the history of the Centennial Conference. Over the last 14 years the Blue Jays have compiled a 451-141-3 (.761) record, won eight Centennial Conference Championships, made eight appearances in the NCAA Tournament, finished as regional runners-up twice (2004 and 2007) and capped Newell's tenure with the national runner-up finish in May.
Before arriving at Johns Hopkins, Newell served as the head coach at Franklin & Marshall College. Prior to that, he served as the pitching coach at Millersville University. Newell began his coaching career at Manheim Township High School (PA), where he guided the baseball squad to a 110-40 record during his tenure.
"I've had a wonderful experience at Johns Hopkins and will continue to help in a consulting role," Newell noted. I wish Bob Babb and the team nothing but the best in the future and know the program will continue to succeed on and off the field."
Babb plans to formally honor Newell at a baseball banquet, which will be held on Saturday September 27th.
