Babb Announces Baseball Recruiting Class

BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins baseball coach Bob Babb has announced a 16-man recruiting class, including players from 11 states, that will enroll at JHU this fall and comprise the Blue Jays' class of 2006.
Nine of the incoming freshmen are pitchers, including right-handers Tim Denning (Morristown, NJ/Delbanton School), Craig Gridelli (Mineola, NY/Chaminade), and Jason Thayer (Westminster, MD/Westminster), and left-hander Jim Flannery (Lakewood, OH/St. Edward). Denning led Morristown to the Parochial A State Championship as he posted a 7-2 record with a 1.38 ERA in 61 innings. Gridelli was 2-1 with a 1.02 ERA in 20 innings, Thayer was a member of Team Maryland 2002 with a 6-1 record and 1.75 ERA in 40 innings, and Flannery struck out 40 batters in 23 innings for St. Edward.
Pitchers, who could also see time in the field, include left-handers Andrew Bail (Chicago, IL/Latin School) and Jonathan Lockhart (Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park), and right-handers Bryce Baumann (Oklahoma City, OK/Casady School), Gary Rosenberg (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield), and Tim Sliken (Pennington, NJ/Pennington School).
Bail, who also plays first base and outfield, was 8-1 with a 0.60 ERA in 58 innings. He compiled 97 strikeouts, including 23 in one nine-inning game. Lockhart was 7-1 with a 0.57 ERA as a senior, while striking out 75 batters and allowing just 29 hits in 61 innings. He held the opposition to five hits or less in seven starts, including one no-hitter and one one-hitter. Baumann, a recipient of "The Oklahoman/Jim Thorpe Boys All-Sports Scholar-Athlete" award, was 10-0 with a 2.38 ERA and could also see time in the outfield.
Rosenberg, who also plays third base and outfield, was a first team all-state performer and member of the Dream Team, which is made up of the best all-state players in Michigan regardless of high school division. Sliken, a third baseman and shortstop in addition to pitcher, batted .358 and was 3-2 on the mound with a 2.25 ERA.
Four infielders join the squad, including second baseman Ian Corcoran (Nashua, NH/Bishop Guertin), middle infielder Colby Gleason (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton), first baseman Jeffrey Markowitz (Wilmington, DE/A.I. duPont), third baseman Mark Nicastre (Durham, CT/Coginchang Regional).
Corcoran had an on-base percentage of .424, Gleason was a .469 hitter and a first team all-conference shortstop, Markowitz was a second team all-state and a member of the Blue-Gold All Star Game in Delaware, and Nicastre batted .360 with a team-high 25 hits.
The class includes three outfielders, Bobby Rudock (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas), Matt Scally (Long Island, NY/Hicksville), and Steve Tasti (Martinsville, NJ/Pungry School). Rudock was an all-county selection as he led St. Thomas Aquinas to district and conference championships and the No.1 ranking in the final class 4A poll. Scally was an all-county performer after hitting .446 with 20 stolen bases. Tasti batted .388 and was an all-conference selection for Pungry.
The Blue Jays finished the 2002 season with a 35-9 record, won a second straight Centennial Conference title, and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in the last six seasons.
