Official ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award Announcement
BALTIMORE, MD – For the second consecutive year, the Johns Hopkins baseball team has been honored for its performance in the classroom as head coach Bob Babb’s team has been honored with the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Excellence Award. The award, which debuted in 2016, is presented to college and high school baseball programs with an overall team GPA of 3.0 or better for the entire academic year.
"We are so excited for the opportunity to honor so many of our member coaches and their players with the Team Academic Excellence Award," said ABCA Executive Director Craig Keilitz. "With all that is expected of our student-athletes, achieving a team GPA of 3.0 or above is truly an accomplishment. It is a testament to the leadership and commitment of our member coaches to developing their players into individuals who will be successful on and off the field."
Johns Hopkins is one of 59 NCAA Division III teams to be recognized among the more 215 at all levels for the 2016-17 academic year. Additionally, among the 379 NCAA Division III baseball programs …
• Johns Hopkins is one of just 30 programs to earn the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award in each of the two years it has been presented. The Blue Jays are one of just three Centennial Conference to be honored both years (Gettysburg and Haverford are the others).
• Of the 30 schools that have earned the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award in the program’s first two years, only three (Johns Hopkins, Wartburg and The College of New Jersey) have also qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament in each of those years as well.
Academic success is nothing new for the Johns Hopkins baseball team. Among all NCAA baseball programs (Division I, II and III), Johns Hopkins’ 28 all-time CoSIDA Academic All-Americans are tied with Bucknell for second most; only Notre Dame (29) has produced more all-time Academic All-America baseball players than Johns Hopkins.
