BALTIMORE, MD - Chez Angeloni, a 2009 Johns Hopkins graduate and the Most Outstanding Player at the 2008 NCAA Division III College World Series, recently signed a free agent contract with the Boston Red Sox organization. Angeloni was assigned to the Red Sox affiliate in the Gulf Coast League (GCL). The rookie league team is currently 7-4 and sits in first place in the GLC's South Division.

Despite signing less than two weeks ago, and less than one week before the GCL Red Sox season was to begin, Angeloni has appeared in two games and picked up his first career victory in an 8-6 win against the GCL Orioles on Tuesday, July 7. He threw 1.2 innings of relief and retired the first five batters he faced in the victory. He had made his first career appearance on July 4 and pitched one scoreless inning in a 5-2 win over the GCL Reds.

Angeloni posted an 18-7 record during his career at Johns Hopkins, including a 9-0 mark as a junior, when he led the Blue Jays to the national championship game. He posted 147 career strikeouts against just 44 walks and ranks in the top 20 in school history in victories and strikeouts.

Angeloni is the first Johns Hopkins player to sign a contract with a major league organization since 2007, when Rob Sanzillo was drafted and signed by the St. Louis Cardinals. He is the 12th Johns Hopkins player to sign a profession contract since head coach Bob Babb took over in 1980 and the fifth to do so since 2004.
