BALTIMORE, MD -

HopkinsSports.com recently caught up with Nick Venezia, a Johns Hopkins alumnus and member of the baseball team from 2005 to 2008. Venezia had a .256 average during his senior year at JHU and helped the Blue Jays to a second-place finish at the College World Series. He was an outfielder for Hopkins and graduated with his bachelor’s degree in May of 2008.

While pursuing his master’s degree in architecture from the University of Oregon, Venezia became the organizational manager for public relations for the student group designBRIDGE.

Venezia departs next week for an architecture study aboard program in Kyoto, Japan. While in Japan, Venezia will be living in a Buddhist temple, visiting Japanese gardens and water coloring the landscape. He will also be studying the relationship between ecology and the urban fabric of the city. Here is what Venezia had to say to HopkinsSports.com!

HopkinsSports.com: One piece of advice you would give to freshman at Hopkins?

Nick Venezia: Walk across the seal…graduating in four years is overrated.

HS: Favorite team mom and why?

NV: I love them all equally because they made such phenomenal children and also my mom, because she looks like me the most.

HS: Best baseball memory?

NV: Rob Sanzillo’s walk-off during the first game of the regional tournament in 2007

HS: Favorite activity to do in the rain?

NV: Strap on my sneakers, maybe a pair of socks and go for a run. People always stare at me like I’m crazy when I run in the rain, but it makes me feel good. I think they are just jealous.

HS: Favorite song to dance to?

NV: Cascada in 2006 and 2007, Miley Cyrus in 2008. 2009 is yet to be determined but so far Lady Gaga is leading the pack.

HS: Favorite part about playing ball at Hopkins?

NV: Sprinting down the line to get foul balls. I was All-Centennial my senior year.

HS: How did you decide on your senior year intro song?

NV: I really can’t keep a straight face when I hear the song ‘push it’ because of the movie Grandma’s Boy. I thought it would be best to go up to the plate with a smile.

HS: How often have you called your mom crying from McDonalds?

NV: How many times have you gone to the bathroom in your life?

HS: We understand you are a cunning linguist. Please elaborate on some of your better song lyrics?

NV: I get inspiration from the people around me. Without my roommates and their families, I would have nothing to sing about.

HS: If you were to play football, which team would you play for, and how far would you be able to take them?

NV: San Francisco 49ers. My arm would power them to the Super Bowl.

HS: There were rumors you tried to start a fraternity at Hopkins. Can you please elaborate?

NV: Those rumors are totally false. We didn’t try to start anything, it just happened. It’s hard to control a thing like that, so you just have to let go and try to give the people what they want.

HS: Describe the NEV brotherhood handshake?

NV: You’ll have to pledge to get that information. All are welcome, we are non-inclusive. Contact Todd Emr while he’s still there (don’t worry you’ve got time).

HS: Favorite Mario Golf Character to play with?

NV: Princess, in honor of our mentor, Mike Durgala.

HS: Put in order from most fun to least fun: Beach week, Las Vegas, Dan Danville Park in Danville, Virginia, New Years, Basement dance parties, Saturday morning practice.

NV: 1. Basement dance parties

2. Basement dance parties

3. Basement dance parties

4. Basement dance parties

5. New Years

6. Beach Week

HS: Have you ever been in a winter wonder land?

NV: Baltimore is a beautiful place after a fresh snowfall.

HS: How is the painting of a baseball in your room going after three years?

NV: Finished and awesome.

HS: Best advice you have ever given a teammates younger sibling?

NV: I don’t know, I tell people a lot of stupid stuff. I feel like a certain sibling of Rob Pietroforte would know the answer to this better than me, which is awesome.

HS: Favorite place for a late night jog: The library, the upper quad, or up and down Guilford Ave.

NV: The Library – People in there can always use a break from their hard work.

HS: If you were forced to eat one piece of meat what would it be and why?

NV: I think I told my house that I would eat a steak if we won the World Series. I would gladly have eaten that steak.

HS: Please describe your study methods?

NV: In one word: effective. To elaborate: I learned early in my college career to keep textbooks open, even when I’m not reading them. It’s science.

HS: On average, how much money do you spend every time you enter a grocery store?

NV: Too much…tofurky and humus really add up.

HS: Favorite catch phrase to use?

NV: No favorites, I just like to hear all my catchphrases played back to me in quick succession by my roommates.

HS: What is your high score in Dance Dance Revolution?

NV: I rate myself on crowd appreciation from ‘pretty awesome’ to ‘really awesome’. I’ve only hit ‘really awesome’ once and it was in Appleton, Wisconsin.

HS: What is one piece of advice you would give someone traveling alone in Europe?

NV: Always know where your car is parked, and more importantly where it is not parked.

Venezia has completed one year of the three and a half year architectural program at the University of Oregon.
