Kahn Named NCBWA National Player of the Year
June 7, 2010
BALTIMORE, MD – Dave Kahn (New Hyde Park, NY/Herricks), who recently led the Johns Hopkins baseball team to the NCAA Division III College World Series, has been named the 2010 NCAA Division III Player of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). Kahn was one of eight players selected as their respective region’s “Hitter of the Year” and from those eight Kahn was a unanimous selection as the top player in the nation. In addition, eight regional Pitchers of the Year were selected and Johns Hopkins sophomore Sam Eagleson (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin) was tabbed the Mid-Atlantic Region’s Pitcher of the Year. In the balloting for the national Pitcher of the Year, Eagleson finished second, just five points behind Chapman’s Brian Rauh. Kahn hit. 458 with 82 hits, 73 runs scored, 71 RBIs, 16 doubles, 16 home runs and five triples in 2010. He led the Blue Jays with a .872 slugging percentage and finished second with a .512 on-base percentage. The senior centerfielder is the first player in school history with 70 hits, 70 runs scored and 70 RBIs in one season. In addition to being honored by the NCBWA, Kahn was previously named the National Player of the Year by d3baseball.com, the Centennial Conference Player of the Year and a First Team All-American by the ABCA and d3baseball.com. Eagleson didn’t throw a pitch for the Blue Jays as a freshman, but tied the Johns Hopkins single-season record for wins by a pitcher (12) as he posted a perfect 12-0 record. He finished the season with a 2.51 ERA and 61 strikeouts against just 23 walks in 82.1 innings. The opposition hit just .211 against him this season.
A First Team All-America pick by both the ABCA and d3baseball.com, Eagleson previously picked up Centennial Conference and ABCA Mid-Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Year awards to go along with First Team All-Centennial and First Team All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors. Johns Hopkins posted a 44-7 record, won the Centennial Conference and Mid-Atlantic Regional titles and finished the season ranked fourth nationally in the final ABCA Poll. The Blue Jays have finished in the top five in the nation twice in the last three years as they were national runners-up in 2008. Since 2004, Johns Hopkins has advanced to the College World Series twice (2008, 2010) and to the regional championship game three other times (2004, 2007, 2009). - 30 - |
