Baltimore, MD -
Johns Hopkins senior righthander Yani Rosenberg (Baltimore, MD/Gilman) was named to the 2002 ECAC Division III Southern Baseball First Team, the conference announced Wednesday. Senior centerfielder Mike DePalma (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) was named to the second team, while sophomore shortstop Carl Ippolito (Ewing, NJ/Pennington School) earned honorable mention honors.
Rosenberg led the Blue Jay pitching staff this season by posting a 9-1 record with a 1.52 earned run average. The school career strikeout leader with 260, Rosenberg struck out 71 batters in 72 innings pitched this year. Rosenberg, who has posted three of the top eight single-season strikeout totals in school history, won 17 straight decisions during the 2001 and 2002 seasons, the second longest streak in Hopkins history. Rosenberg also ranks third at JHU with 28 career wins and an .875 winning percentage.
DePalma, who led the team with a .449 batting average in 2002, the ninth-highest single-season average in school history, finished the season with 40 hits and 28 runs scored despite missing some time due to an injury. DePalma ended the season riding an eight-game hitting streak during which he batted .548 (17-for-31) with 10 runs scored and six runs batted in. DePalma finished his career with a .364 batting average.
Ippolito, who like Rosenberg and DePalma was named to the Centennial Conference First Team this year, batted .333 in his first season as the starting shortstop and led the team with three triples. Ippolito finished the season second on the team with 38 runs batted in, third in runs scored with 36, and added eight doubles and five home runs.
