Three Blue Jays Named To ABCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region Baseball First Team
May 25, 2004 Baltimore, MD - Johns Hopkins senior second baseman Tim Casale (West Hempstead, NY/Chaminade), junior centerfielder Paul Winterling (Glenelg, MD/McDonogh) and senior righthander Jeremy Brown (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh) were named to the 2004 ABCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region Baseball Team on Tuesday. Senior rightfielder Rob Morrison (Malibu, CA/Loyola) was named to the second team.
Brown, who this year was named the Centennial Pitcher of the Year for the second straight season, led Hopkins with nine wins, a 1.55 earned run average, 81.1 innings pitched, 93 strikeouts and a 1.72 opponents' batting average. He allowed one earned run in seven-inning complete game wins over Ursinus on March 27 and Franklin & Marshall on April 10, and gave up one earned run in consecutive nine-inning complete game victories over McDaniel on April 15 and Catholic on April 21. In the NCAA Regional Brown threw a complete game shutout against Juniata, just the second shutout by Hopkins in NCAA history, and was named to the all-regional team. He finished his career second at Hopkins with 247 strikeouts and tied for seventh with 24 career wins, while his .828 career winning percentage is the sixth highest in JHU history.
Casale, the Centennial Conference Player of the Year, batted .405 with team-highs of 44 runs scored and five triples while ranking second with 60 hits. Additionally he hit 12 doubles, knocked in 25 runs and stole 27 bases in 30 attempts while posting 19 multiple-hit games this season. Casale went 6-for-12 with five runs scored in the league tournament and recorded five three-hit games from the leadoff spot this year. He recorded a hit in 34 of the 40 games in which he had an at bat this season, and currently is ranked 26th in Division III in stolen bases per game. Winterling, a first team all-conference selection this year, batted .336 with team-highs of 10 home runs and 50 runs batted in. He stole a team-high 31 bases in 32 attempts, was third on the team with 39 runs scored and added 42 hits and 12 doubles. Winterling, who is currently 15th in Division III in stolen bases per game and 19th in RBIs per game, had two three-hit games and seven two-hit games this season. He is currently tied for third at Hopkins with 22 career home runs and is the only player in JHU history to hit at least 10 home runs in two seasons. Morrison, who was named to the all-conference second team, led the Blue Jays with a .477 batting average and 63 hits this season. Morrison, who had a 20-game hit streak snapped Sunday, recorded a hit in 32 of the 35 games in which he had an at-bat this year. He went 4-for-5 with two runs scored in the win over Wheaton on March 20, and has seven three-hit games and 14 two-games games this season. In the May 1 win over F&M in the conference tournament Morrison went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a runs scored, and the following day was 3-for-6 with two runs batted in and three runs scored. He batted .409 at the NCAA Regional with two home runs and five RBIs to earn all-regional honors.
