EWING, NJ - The Johns Hopkins baseball team placed six players on the 2003 Mid-Atlantic Region NCAA Division III ABCA All-Star Teams as announced on Tuesday. Senior Jeremy Brown (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh School) and sophomore Paul Winterling (Glenelg, MD/McDonogh School) highlighted the group as they were named to the first team, while the Blue Jays also had two players named to both the second and third teams.

Brown, who was named the Centennial Conference Pitcher-of-the-Year, posted an 8-2 record and a 3.27 ERA in 13 appearances, including 10 starts. He led the Blue Jays in complete games (5), innings pitched (66.0) and recorded a career-high 77 strikeouts. In his first start of the season, Brown pitched the sixth no-hitter in school history and struck out 12 batters as JHU defeated Lakeland, 9-0.

Winterling was named Centennial Player-of-the-Year as he had a breakthrough season and led Hopkins in most offensive categories. He batted .397 and led the team in hits (50), runs scored (46), doubles (13), home runs (12), runs batted in (46), stolen bases (12) and slugging percentage (.817). In JHU's 32-2 win at Washington, Winterling was 4-for-6 with three home runs, including an NCAA record-tying two grand slams, and 11 RBIs, just one shy of the NCAA Division III single-game mark.

Sophomores Mike Spiciarich (Syosset, NY/Chaminade) and Paul Long (Oklahoma City, OK/Heritage Hall) were named to the second team. Spiciarich, a first team All-Centennial selection, excelled in his first season as a starter as he batted .393 with 42 hits in 107 at-bats and played outstanding defense. He was second on the team with 37 runs scored and 12 doubles, while adding three triples, four home runs and 20 RBIs.

Long was named second team All-Centennial after starting 32 games and batting .361 with 39 hits in 108 at-bats. He was second on the team with 11 stolen bases, third with 11 doubles and also totaled 28 runs, three triples, five home runs and 27 runs batted in.

Senior Jay Cieri (Pine Brook, NJ/Montville) and sophomore Mike Durgala (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson) rounded out the selections for Hopkins as they were named to the third team. Cieri, who was named first team All-Centennial, started 33 games and batted leadoff for the Blue Jays. He totaled a team-high 30 walks for the second straight season led the club with a .504 on-base percentage. Cieri also finished the year with 35 runs, five home runs, 20 RBIs and 10 stolen bases.

Durgala, a second team All-Centennial selection, batted .380 and was second on the team with 46 hits and 121 at-bats. He was also second on the team with 10 home runs and 44 runs batted in, while collecting 35 runs, 10 doubles, nine stolen bases and a .711 slugging percentage.
