The Johns Hopkins baseball team remained in the No. 1 spot in the American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division III Poll released Monday.
Hopkins, which is 37-2 and has won the Centennial Conference Tournament championship this season, received 239 points and seven of the eight of the first-place votes. Emory, which is 40-4 on the year, received the other first-place vote and is second with 230 points, while Trinity-TX is third with 227 points. Eastern Connecticut State is fourth with 211 points, while Wisconsin-Whitewater is fifth with 198 points. Ithaca (194), St. Thomas (185), Rowan (182), Marietta (174) and Wooster (163) round out the top 10.
Senior Rob Morrison (Malibu, CA/Loyola) leads Hopkins with a .491 batting average, while senior Tim Casale (West Hempstead, NY/Chaminade), the Centennial Player of the Year, has posted team-highs of 57 hits and 40 runs scored to lead an offense that is averaging 9.2 runs per game. Junior Mike Durgala (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson) is batting .375 with 36 hits and 36 RBIs, while junior Paul Winterling (Glenelg, MD/McDonogh) is hitting .343 with team-highs of 49 runs batted in and 10 home runs.
Centennial Pitcher of the Year Jeremy Brown (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh) is 8-0 with a 1.74 earned average and a team-high 83 strikeouts to lead a Blue Jay pitching staff this has a 2.89 earned run average this season. Senior Matt Righter (Clarion, PA/Lawrenceville Prep) is 6-0 with a 2.22 ERA, while junior Ryan McConnell (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) is 7-0 with a 2.37 earned run average. Sophomore Jason Thayer (Finksburg, MD/Westminster) is 5-0 and senior Russ Berger (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) is 4-0, while senior Sven Stafford (Evanston, IL/Evanston) has posted seven saves.
Hopkins, which has set the school record for wins in a season, will compete in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional beginning on Thursday, May 20 in Boyertown, PA.
