The Inside Pitch With Dan Schiffner May 7, 2009
BALTIMORE, MD - Senior Dan Schiffner caught up with HopkinsSports.com after the Centennial Conference Tournament to give fans an inside look at the Blue Jays as they head to their third-consecutive NCAA Regional Tournament next week. Schiffner has made 10 career appearances on the mound for the Blue Jays and started three games this season. He owns a 6.75 ERA and has 22 strikeouts this season after 21.1 innings. The senior is a civil engineering major and will pursue his master’s degree in civil engineering next fall at Princeton. Here is what Schiffner had to say about himself and his team. HopkinsSports.com: Dream job? Dan Schiffner: Designing awesome structures. HS: Teammate that inspires you? DS: Tim Rappazzo. HS: Teammate that will surprise you next season? DS: Todd Emr, he’s not leaving. HS: One word to describe me on the field? DS: Calm. HS: One word to describe me off of the field? DS: Calmer. HS: Favorite class? DS: Advanced Structural Analysis. HS: Why Hopkins? DS: I wanted to follow the exact steps of my mentor, Tony Margve. HS: Favorite pre-game meal? DS: Lean Cuisine. HS: If I could eat dinner anywhere, I would choose… DS: Jim’s Cheesesteaks in Philly. HS: Favorite Centennial venue to compete in? DS: Homewood, it’s a pitcher’s park. HS: What’s on your iPod on game day? DS: Coheed and Cambria. HS: If I wasn’t playing baseball, I’d be DS: A fat kid. HS: Favorite baseball story? DS: In one weekend my freshman year, the JV team won 4 consecutive games on walkoffs.
HS: Favorite Bob Babb quote? DS: "Nothing good happens after midnight." HS: Who is your most intense teammate and why? DS: Garber . . . when he gets emotional he turns green and triples in size. HS: After Hopkins, I would like to… DS: Get a masters degree in Civil Engineering then find a job that I enjoy. HS: If I could trade places with anyone for a day? DS: Any professional pitcher. HS: Coke or Pepsi? DS: Pepsi. HS: Favorite professional sports franchise? DS: The Mets, despite their recent failures. HS: In my free time, I like to DS: Nap. HS: Superstitions? DS: Never step on the foul line. HS: One thing that being a member of the baseball team has taught you? DS: Hard work pays off. HS: What is the biggest strength of the team this season? DS: Everybody loves everybody. HS: Thing I miss most about home? DS: Summer nights. HS: Nickname? DS: Shifty. HS: What do you focus on when you pitch? DS: Coach Denny Cox keeps me focused on relaxing the forearm and hitting nothing but net. HS: What other sports did you play in high school? DS: One year of hockey until I broke my throwing arm. HS: Best thing about being a pitcher? DS: Raiding the dugout food basket while the hitters are playing. HS: Athletic Accomplishment you are most proud of? DS: Throwing back to back no hitters freshman year of high school. HS: Best road trip you’ve ever taken? DS: I was also a member of the road trip down to Virginia Tech. HS: Favorite movie? DS: Happy Gilmore. HS: Favorite place to hang out? DS: The 3215 nap couch designed just for napping. It consisted of a normal couch with a futon mattress on top and ample cushiony pillows. HS: Hardest class you ever taken? DS: Dynamics. I got a 13/30 on a test and it was a B+. HS: The No. 1 thing you want to do after you graduate? DS: Travel. HS: Worst part of college? DS: Doing dishes after eating my sub-par food HS: Favorite mid-night snack? DS: Ice cream. HS: What is Pat Steffee’s favorite Dan Schiffner story? DS: I placed a mouse trap in my room last year with peanut butter as bait. After 4 days of not catching a mouse, I accidentally left a closed bag of peanuts on my desk. The mouse ate my peanuts. I was furious and Pat made fun of me for 6-7 weeks for ranting so much. In fact, he must still find it to be hilarious because he wanted me to tell you this story.
