May 7, 2002

BALTIMORE - The Johns Hopkins baseball team moved up two spots to sixth in the latest 2002 Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's NCAA Division III poll. The ranking is the highest for JHU since the team was ranked fourth in the country for three straight polls during the 1998 season. The Blue Jays (34-6), who won their fifth Centennial Conference Championship last week, received 196 points and are the lone Centennial Conference school in the top-30.

The Blue Jays, who are also ranked first in the Mid-Atlantic region, went 8-1 in the last two weeks. JHU swept a doubleheader from Ursinus, winning 6-1 and 2-1, then defeated Gettysburg, 22-4, and closed the Centennial schedule with a doubleheader split against Muhlenberg (7-11, 14-3). Hopkins stepped out of conference to top Neumann College, 8-2, and Montclair State, 2-0. The Blue Jays then defeated Muhlenberg, 3-1 and 5-4 to win the Centennial Conference Championship. Overall, Hopkins has won 12 of its last 13 games and 22 of its last 24 contests.

The Blue Jays conclude regular season action this afternoon as JHU travels to York College for a non-conference contest at 3:30 p.m.
