BALTIMORE, MD -

HopkinsSports.com sat down with fifth-year senior Paul Martone of the Johns Hopkins baseball team after two big wins at Haverford on Saturday. The Blue Jays are the No. 2 seed in the Centennial Conference Tournament this coming weekend and will host a first round game with Franklin & Marshall on Friday, May 1.

Martone suffered an elbow injury during his sophomore season, but returned to the team last season for his senior year. Martone made nine appearances last season, allowing three earned runs and striking out five. This season, Martone has made eight appearances and thrown 9.0 innings. Martone has fanned eight batters and has a 5.00 ERA.

Martone is enrolled at the Bloomberg School of Public Health and is specializing in environmental health sciences.

PM: We got off to a slow start, but this team has seen a recent explosion of positive mental attitude (PMA) which is very promising.

HS: What do you focus on when you pitch?

PM: PMA.

HS: Favorite thing to do after a win?

PM: Eat a nice big meal, although I do that after losses too.

HS: What other sports did you play in high school?

PM: Football.

HS: What was the best thing about growing up in New Jersey?

PM: Living near the beach and Atlantic City.

HS: Best thing about being a pitcher?

PM: Pitcher’s line during our infield/outfield.

HS: Best advice your parents ever gave you?

PM: Don’t do drugs.

HS: Do you consider yourself liberal or conservative?

PM: Conservative.

PM: Red.

PM: My balcony in the Northway.

HS: Why are you called the Big Fat Liar?

PM: The story is a long and mostly fabricated one made up by recent graduate Ryan Kuhlman and current pitcher Greg Harbeck in Arizona last year. Ironically, I was the only one involved who did not tell a lie but was somehow branded with the nickname Big Fat Liar (BFL).

HS: I hear your cat Ace stinks at hunting mice. Is this true?

PM: This is a false statement. I let him roam the dirtiest mice-infested pig pen in the Northway (a.k.a. Bro-mansion) and there has been no mention of mice since.

HS: What is the significance of your tattoo?

PM: It is not a real tattoo. I put it on my arm from a piece of Fruit Stripe gum wrapper.

HS: After four years at Hopkins, what is the most important thing you’ve ever learned?

PM: Don’t take anything for granted.
