The Johns Hopkins baseball team remained in the No. 1 spot in the American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division III Poll released Monday.
Hopkins, which is 33-0 overall and 17-0 in the Centennial Conference this season, received 240 points and all eight of the first-place votes. Emory, which is 40-3 on the year, is second with 232 points, while Trinity-TX is third with 221 points. Eastern Connecticut State is fourth with 207 points, just ahead of Denison with 201 points. Wisconsin-Whitewater (194), St. Thomas (190), Rowan (30-5), Ithaca (176) and Trinity-CT (166) round out the top 10.
Senior Rob Morrison (Malibu, CA/Loyola) leads Hopkins with a .500 batting average, while senior Tim Casale (West Hempstead, NY/Chaminade) has posted team-highs of 45 hits and 32 runs scored to lead an offense that is averaging 8.8 runs per game. Junior Mike Durgala (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson) is batting .395 with 34 hits and 27 RBIs, while junior Paul Winterling (Glenelg, MD/McDonogh) is hitting .317 with team-highs of 35 runs batted in and seven home runs.
Senior
Jeremy Brown (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh) is 8-0 with a 1.16 earned average and a team-high 76 strikeouts to lead a Blue Jay pitching staff this has a 2.39 earned run average this season. Senior
Matt Righter (Clarion, PA/Lawrenceville Prep) is 5-0 with a 1.29 ERA, while junior
Ryan McConnell (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) is also 5-0 with a 2.67 earned run average. Senior
Russ Berger (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) and sophomore
Jason Thayer (Finksburg, MD/Westminster) are each 4-0, while senior
Sven Stafford (Evanston, IL/Evanston) has posted six saves.
Hopkins, which currently is tied for the fourth-longest winning streak in NCAA history, travels to No. 30 Montclair State Tuesday at 7 p.m. and hosts Dickinson Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
