Winterling and Berger Earn Centennial Weekly Honors
April 21, 2003
LANCASTER, PA - Johns Hopkins sophomore outfielder Paul Winterling (Glenelg, MD/McDonogh School) was named Centennial Player-of-the-Week and junior Russ Berger (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) earned Centennial Co-Pitcher-of-the-Week honors, the league announced Monday.
Winterling was 7-for-19 (.368) with 10 runs scored, four home runs and 15 runs batted in as Hopkins completed a 5-0 week. He was 4-for-6 with four runs, three home runs and 11 runs batted in as JHU defeated Washington College 32-2. Winterling tied the NCAA record with two grand slams in the contest and was just one RBI shy of tying the NCAA record for RBIs in a game.
Winterling also went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in a 15-3 win against McDaniel and drove in the game-winning run with a double in a 2-1 win at Haverford. He leads the team in runs (33), hits (33), doubles (9), home runs (10), runs batted in (38) and slugging percentage (.914).
Berger was 2-0 in two starts last week against Washington College and Haverford. He allowed two runs while striking out six in six innings against Washington, and followed that with a two-hit shutout, the second of his career, in a 10-0 win at Haverford. Berger lowered his ERA to 3.45 on the year and is tied for the team lead with five wins.
The Blue Jays return to action Tuesday as Hopkins travels to face Ursinus College in a Centennial Conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
