The Johns Hopkins baseball team remained in the No. 1 spot in the American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division III Poll released Monday.
Hopkins, which is 24-0 overall and 9-0 in the Centennial Conference this season, received 239 points and seven of the eight first-place votes. Emory, which is 34-3 on the year, is tied for second with 225 points and the other first-place vote, while Wisconsin-Oshkosh, 18-2 this season, also picked up 225 points. Eastern Connecticut State is fourth with 211 points, just ahead of Carthage with 210 points. Trinity-TX (202), Wooster (195), Virginia Wesleyan (168), Cortland State (168) and Rowan (161) round out the top 10.
Senior Rob Morrison (Malibu, CA/Loyola) leads Hopkins with a .482 batting average, while senior Tim Casale (West Hempstead, NY/Chaminade), the current conference co-player of the week, has posted team-highs of 33 hits and 24 runs scored to lead an offense that is averaging 8.7 runs per game. Junior Mike Durgala (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson) is batting .422 with 27 hits and 20 RBIs, while junior Paul Winterling (Glenelg, MD/McDonogh) is hitting .359 with a team-best 30 runs batted in and six home runs.
Senior
Jeremy Brown (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh) is 6-0 with a 1.23 earned average and a team-high 52 strikeouts to lead a Blue Jay pitching staff this has a 2.45 earned run average this season. Senior
Matt Righter (Clarion, PA/Lawrenceville Prep) is 3-0 with a 1.45 ERA, while sophomore
Jason Thayer (Finksburg, MD/Westminster) is also 3-0 with a 1.27 earned run average. Senior
Russ Berger (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) and junior
Ryan McConnell (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) also are 3-0, while senior
Sven Stafford (Evanston, IL/Evanston) has posted six saves.
Hopkins returns to action Tuesday when the Blue Jays host McDaniel in a league game at 3:30 p.m.
