Blue Jays Head To McDaniel To Resume Longest All-Time Series In School History March 30, 2009

BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins baseball team split the season-series with Gettysburg last week, but looks to rebound with three Centennial Conference series this week. The Blue Jays will play McDaniel, Swarthmore, Ursinus and a non-conference game against Messiah in the next six days. Hopkins (8-8, 1-1 Centennial) is set to play seven games this week and nine games in the next 10 days. Scouting The Green Terror McDaniel is 8-5 (1-1 Centennial) on the season and has a 3-0 record at home. The Green Terror is hitting .333. Two on the squad, Troy Tipton (.409) and Harold Baines (.400), are batting .400 or better. The Green Terror has won three of their last four games, including a split with Dickinson last week to start their Centennial Conference schedule. Inside The Series With McDaniel The local Johns Hopkins-McDaniel rivalry resumes on Tuesday in Westminster. The two teams first met in 1890. McDaniel is one of just four teams that faced Hopkins between 1887 and 1892 that still compete against JHU today. The series includes 128 all-time contests, the most played against any opponent in Johns Hopkins baseball history. Hopkins leads the 118-year-series, 69-59. The Green Terror scored 21 runs against the Blue Jays in 1955, a series-high. Since the formation of the Centennial Conference in 1994, Hopkins is 25-1 against McDaniel at Homewood. At McDaniel, the Blue Jays have won 12 of 14 games since 1994. Under head coach Bob Babb since 1980, Hopkins is 41-3. The Green Terror has not upset Hopkins since 1999 as the Blue Jays have won 15-straight against McDaniel. In their last meeting on March 28, 2008, Hopkins defeated McDaniel, 17-0 in Westminster. Scouting Messiah The Blue Jays travel to Messiah on Wednesday after being rained out on March 5 in Baltimore. Messiah is 7-16-1 (1-5 Commonwealth) this season and have a 3-5 mark at home. The Falcons are hitting .286 as a team. Inside The Series With Messiah The Blue Jays are 11-1 all-time against Messiah since 1992. Hopkins was won nine straight against the Falcons since its only loss in 1997, 3-0. The Blue Jays have played in Grantham, PA just once. Hopkins defeated the Falcons 4-3 in 2001 in their only contest on the road against Messiah. The Blue Jays topped the Falcons, 13-2 on March 4, 2008 in their last meeting. Hopkins has out-scored the Falcons 96-38 throughout 12 all-time contests. Scouting Swarthmore The Garnet are now 8-10 (0-2 Centennial) after dropping two contests to Muhlenberg to open their Centennial Conference season. Swarthmore is 3-4 at home and batting .318 as a team. Mike Waterhouse (.431) and Michael Cameron (.426) lead the offensive effort for the Garnet. Waterhouse, a Weston, CT native, went to the same high school as Hopkins senior Matt Goldman. Inside The Series With Swarthmore Hopkins leads the all-time series with Swarthmore, 65-38 since its beginning in 1914. Saturday will mark the 104th meeting between the two. JHU has not suffered a loss to the Garnet since April 1, 2000 in the first game of the doubleheader. Since becoming Centennial Conference opponents, the Blue Jays are 27-3 against Swarthmore. Since 1980 under Babb's direction, Hopkins is 46-9 against the Garnet. Each of the 30 contests between the two have come in doubleheaders. The Blue Jays have swept the Garnet in 12 of the 15 doubleheaders since 1994. Hopkins has won 17-straight games against Swarthmore and nine of the last 10 on the road against the Garnet. View From The Nest The Blue Jays have blasted 26 homers this season, two more than the combined amount from this week's competition (McDaniel (7), Messiah (8), Swarthmore (9)). 11 different Blue Jays have hit at least one homerun this season. JHU has played 16 games and nine players have recorded multiple homers this season. Junior Lee Bolyard leads the team with four homeruns and owns a .953 slugging percentage. JHU leads the Centennial Conference in hits (240), runs (182), and batting average (.396). Franklin & Marshall comes the closest with 225 hits, 146 runs and a .350 team batting average. Hopkins is hitting .396 as a team after 16 games this season, ranking second-best nationally. The Blue Jay freshman are holding their own as well, batting .326 after 16 games. Sorted by academic year, the Blue Jay juniors lead the way for Hopkins, batting .406 (Not including the lone sophomore). Senior Chez Angeloni recorded the 100th strikeout of his career against Wheaton on March 13. Angeloni is the 12th player in Johns Hopkins baseball history to strike out 100 batters or more in a career. Angeloni has made 21 starts in 31 career appearances. Two Blue Jays have registered 100 hits or more in their careers to date. Senior Todd Emr (169) and junior Brian Youchak (112) are two of just 31 players all-time in Johns Hopkins history to accomplish this feat. Youchak has recorded 24 hits this season, while Emr is second on the team with 23. D3Baseball.com Preseason First Team All-American Brian Youchak was the first Blue Jay to reach the 20-hit mark this season. Youchak matched his 20 hits with 20 runs scored. The junior leads the team in hits (24). Youchak has hit 4-for-5 in two contests this season and has a .400 batting average. Junior Chris Huisman's six hits against Concordia tied the Johns Hopkins single-game record for hits. Huisman went 6-for-6 against Concordia with one homerun on March 19. Senior Dave Garber and junior Brian Youchak tied for the longest hit-streak this season. Each recorded hits in nine consecutive games. Senior Dave Fioretti has the second-best ERA on the team (3.94) and has thrown the second-most innings by a Blue Jay pitcher this season (16.0). Eight total Hopkins hitters own a batting average over .400. Junior Dave Kahn leads the way with his .581 after 18 hits in 31 at-bats, ranking third in the nation.
