Hopkins Earns Top Spot in Centennial Confernce Preseason Poll
Feb. 25, 2008
LANCASTER, PA - The Johns Hopkins baseball team has been selected to finish first in the Centennial Conference Preseason Baseball poll released by the conference office on Monday. Hopkins captured its eighth Centennial Conference title in 2007 and advanced to the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Final before falling to Kean. The Blue Jays recorded the second most wins in school history (38) and played the most games in school history (49).
Hopkins was picked to finish first in the vote by the league's head coaches after receiving 78 points and seven of a possible 10 first place votes. Franklin & Marshall was picked second with 69 points and one first place vote while Ursinus was third with 64 points. Gettysburg and Haverford rounded out the top five with 61 and 47 points respectively and one first place vote each.
Head coach Bob Babb returns for his 29th season on the bench and needs 13 more wins to reach 800 victories in his career. Babb will look to senior captains Jonas Fester, Rob Pietroforte and Todd Emr to lead the way this season. Fester, a First Team ABCA All-American last season, led the Blue Jays in several offensive categories and tied the NCAA single-season doubles record last year with 27. Pietroforte, a First Team All-Centennial and Third Team ESPN the Magazine All-American, started all 49 games in centerfield last season and tied the school record for triples in a season with seven. Emr was hitting .529 in the first five games last year before a broken arm cost him the rest of the season. On the mound, the Blue Jays will turn to senior Ryan Kuhlman, who was 9-1 with a 3.17 ERA, to lead the staff.
Babb and the Blue Jays are ranked #10 in the Collegiate Baseball/ABCA Preseason Poll. Hopkins is set to kick off its 2008 campaign on March 1 by hosting Rutgers-Newark in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
