Jan. 25, 2002

BALTIMORE - The Johns Hopkins baseball team, which won a fourth Centennial Conference championship in 2001, is ranked 21st in the 2002 Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's NCAA Division III preseason poll. The Blue Jays, who posted a 33-14 record and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the 10th time in school history, received 188 points and are the lone Centennial Conference school in the preseason top-30. Hopkins was ranked 30th in the preseason poll prior to the 2001 season and finished the year ranked 23rd.

JHU will feature an experienced squad and a solid pitching staff in 2002. Senior Yani Rosenberg (Baltimore, MD/Gilman), a Second Team All-American and Centennial Pitcher-of-the-Year last season, leads a pitching staff that posted a combined 2.79 earned run average and a school-record 290 strikeouts. Sophomores Russ Berger (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) and George Merrell (Bloomsburg, PA/Central Columbia) return to the rotation after each recorded five wins and ERAs under 2.00 as freshman.

Offensively, the Blue Jays will be led by senior second baseman Karl Sineath (West Chester, PA/West Chester Henderson), who earned Centennial Conference First Team honors after setting a JHU single-season record with 36 stolen bases. The trio of first baseman Ben Taylor (Pawling, NY/Trinity-Pawling) and outfielders Mike DePalma (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) and Joe Urban (Nanticoke, PA/Bishop Hoban) is also expected to provide significant offensive production in 2002.

The Blue Jays open the season with eight consecutive home games, including the season opener versus Messiah on Friday, March 1 at 3:00 p.m. JHU is scheduled to face five teams ranked in the preseason poll this year, including Montclair St., Salisbury, Wooster, Allegheny, and William Patterson.
