Angeloni Pitches Hopkins Past #1 Chapman 5-4
May 24, 2008
APPLETON, WI - Junior Chez Angeloni (Jenkintown, PA/La Salle College HS) threw a complete game to lead the Johns Hopkins baseball team to a 5-4 victory over Chapman in the College World Series on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays gave the number one team in the country just their fourth loss of the season. The Blue Jays (40-6) won their fifth straight contest and tied the school record for victories in a season with the win.
Hopkins struck first with a run in the top of the first inning. Senior center fielder Rob Pietroforte (Brooklyn, NY/Berkeley Carroll) reached on a fielder's choice before stealing second. Senior third baseman Todd Emr (Westwood, NJ/Saddle River Day) then doubled to left field to plate Pietroforte. Pietroforte's run was his 65th of the season tying the JHU single-season record for runs scored in a season.
The Blue Jays added to their lead in the third as senior second baseman Nate Adelman (Redwood City, CA/Menlo School) led off the inning with a single and came around to score on Pietroforte's RBI groundout.
Chapman took the lead back with a four-run outing in the bottom of the third. The Blue Jays sat down the first two Panther batters before Chapman strung together five hits. Kurt Yacko's double scored the first run of the frame before Mike Vass plated two with his single up the middle. Chapman got its final run of the inning on a single from Stuart Hyman.
The Blue Jays got back to work in the top of the fifth as Adelman drew a one-out walk and moved to second on junior left fielder Dan Merzel's (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton) single up the middle. Sophomore right fielder Brian Youchak (Pittsburgh, PA/Vincentian Academy) followed Merzel's hit with a single of his own to score Adelman. After Chapman got the second out of the inning, Emr came through with a single to left field that scored both Merzel and Youchak.
Hopkins looked to add to its lead in the top of the sixth with the bases loaded but where unable to get any one in. While on the hill Angeloni made the one-run lead hold as he pitched six straight scoreless innings. The Blue Jays survived a scare in the seventh as Ryan Prechtl lined one off Angeloni, but he was able to recover and get the runner at first.
Angeloni got help from his defense in the eighth as Vass had an infield single to third base. The ball got away from the Blue Jays at first and rolled into the bullpen. Adelman made a heads up play backing up first base and was able to pick up the loose ball and throw Vass out at second for the first out of the inning.
Angeloni pitched his third complete game of the year and remains unbeaten at 8-0. He gave up four runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts and no walks.
Ryan Clear took the loss for Chapman to fall to 9-2 on the year. This is Chapman's first loss of the season in a one run game.
Emr was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two doubles. Youchak was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI to extend his hit streak to 28 games. Adelman went 1-for-3 with two runs scored on the game.
The Blue Jays advance to face the winner of the Trinity/Linfield contest tomorrow at 7 p.m. CT in a winner's bracket contest.
