Blue Jays Stay Alive In NCAA Baseball Regional With 7-3 Win Over Arcadia

Boyertown, PA - Johns Hopkins senior righthander Russ Berger (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) innings while senior righthander Sven Stafford (Evanston, IL/Evanston) threw two perfect innings to pick up the save as the top-ranked Blue Jays stayed alive in the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Baseball Regional with a 7-3 win over Arcadia Saturday night at Bear Stadium. Hopkins, which improves to 40-3, will face Rowan Sunday at 12 noon. If the Blue Jays win, the two teams will play again 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. Arcadia was eliminated and ends its season with a 27-16 record.
Berger, who gave up seven hits and struck out a season-high four batters, improved to 5-0 and won his 13th straight decision. Stafford posted his eighth save of the season and the 14th of his career, setting the JHU records for both saves in a single season and a career.
The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the bottom of the third as senior second baseman Tim Casale (West Hempstead, NY/Chaminade) led off with a walk and senior rightfielder Rob Morrison (Malibu, CA/Loyola) drilled a home run to centerfield. Junior third baseman Mike Spiciarich (Syosset, NY/Chaminade) led off the bottom of the fourth by homering to left, but Arcadia scored twice in the top of the fifth to cut the Hopkins lead to 3-2. Brandon Mazzie led off the fram with a double, and one out later Anthony Matranga doubled to score Mazzie. Anthony Ragona followed with a double to plate Matranga, but after a walk Berger retired the next two Knight batters to escape further damage. Junior centerfielder Paul Winterling (Glenelg, MD/McDonogh) doubled with one out in the bottom of the fifth ans scored on a double by junior first baseman Mike Durgala (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson). An out later senior leftfielder Craig Cetta (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) singled up the middle to score Durgala and give Hopkins a 5-2 lead. The Blue Jays added a run in the sixth as Casale walked, stole second, moved to third on a bunt single by Morrison and scored when Durgala reached on an error. John Connell singled and John Bellis doubled to lead off the eighth and knock Berger out of the game, but Staffored retired the next three batters, allowing just one run to score. Hopkins added a run in the eighth when Morrison singled to score Casale, and Stafford then retired the side in order in the ninth. Spiciarich went 4-for-4 for the Blue Jays, while Morrison was 3-for-5 with three runs batted in. -30- |
