Box Score

SALISBURY, MD - Shenandoah spoiled a three-run Johns Hopkins lead in the bottom of the eighth in the NCAA South Regional final to take an 11-7 decision and the regional crown. The Blue Jays led by as many as three runs after five complete innings at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Md. JHU concludes the 2009 season with a 28-16 record, a Centennial Conference Championship and a second-place finish in the NCAA South Regional. The Hornets advance to their first College World Series with a 37-8 record.

Senior Todd Emr and juniors Lee Bolyard and Brian Youchak each earned all-tournament team honors after their standout offensive performances in the NCAA South Regional.

The Hornets scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth on four hits to take an 11-7 lead they would not relinquish. Shenandoah sat down three straight JHU batters in the ninth to secure the win.

Hopkins scored four runs on four hits in the first inning against the Hornets. Emr, Youchak and John Swarr each had base hits in the first, while Bolyard knocked a double.

The Blue Jays added one on in the second when James Teta scored on a sacrifice fly to right field.

Shenandoah came back with two runs in the third after a two-run homer from Most Outstanding Player Kevin Brashears.

Hopkins plated two runs in the top of the fifth inning on wild pitches for a 7-4 lead. Shenandoah gained one back in the bottom of the inning to make it a two run ball game.

Youchak had four hits to lead the Blue Jays against the Hornets. Shenandoah's Brashears was 5-for-5 with three RBI.

Earlier in the day, Hopkins handed Christopher Newport its second loss of the weekend, 12-5, to advance to the final against Shenandoah. The Blue Jays got a complete game from senior hurler Chez Angeloni to fuel the seven-run victory. Angeloni struck out seven batters and gave up just three earned runs.

The Captains managed two runs on one hit and a pair of Blue Jay errors in the first, but JHU came back with four runs in the second to take the 4-2 lead.

Hopkins exploded with an eight-run third inning to gain a 12-4 advantage. Youchak led off with a solo shot to left and Bolyard followed with a double, advancing to third on the throw. Bolyard would score on a throw from center after a fly out. Swarr scored on a wild pitch while Dave Kahn crossed the plate on a Dan Merzel bunt. Teta touched home plate on a base hit form Emr to bring up Youchak for the second time in the third inning. Youchak ripped a two-run triple to finish out the inning.

The Blue Jays would not score again in the game and only allowed one more run, coming in the fourth. Eight in the third was enough to send JHU to the regional final and face off against Shenandoah for the second time in the tournament.

Kahn was 3-for-4 with a stolen base and RBI against Christopher Newport. Youchak had three hits and needed a double to hit for the cycle. He tallied three RBI, a team-high.

The Blue Jays have advanced to an NCAA Regional final in each of the last three seasons. After fighting its way out of the loser's bracket this weekend to the finals, Hopkins improves to 10-2 in elimination games in the last two seasons.
