Hopkins Defeats Washington & Jefferson, 10-2 To Stay Alive In NCAA Regionals

SALISBURY, Md. - Junior Marco Simmons tossed a complete game for Johns Hopkins and allowed just six hits as the Blue Jays defeated Washington & Jefferson (35-14), 10-2. Senior Todd Emr paced JHU on offense, going 4-for-5 with two doubles. The Blue Jays (27-15) survived another elimination game in the NCAA South Regional Tournament and will face Christopher Newport on Saturday at 1 p.m. Emr's RBI-double scored Dan Merzel and Brian Youchak batted Emr in from third for a 2-0 Blue Jay lead after one. Hopkins plated another in the third as John Swarr singled up the middle to put Lee Bolyard across the plate as JHU went up 3-0. Washington & Jefferson came back with two runs in the fourth, both after singles up the middle, scoring its only runs of the game. A double from Bolyard scored a pair for the Blue Jays in the fifth after Ryan Biner singled and Youchak doubled to reach. JHU would rack up another three runs in the top of the sixth as Dave Kahn, James Teta and Emr each scored to give the Blue Jays a six-run, 8-2 advantage. Hopkins got its final two runs in the top of the ninth after Youchak doubled to lead off. The junior scored on a sacrifice fly from Swarr before Bolyard reached the plate on a double from Kahn. The Blue Jays held on in the bottom of the inning to take the game, 10-2. Simmons struck out six batters to go the distance for the second time this season. Youchak, Bolyard and Kahn each had three hits for Hopkins. The Blue Jays take on Christopher Newport at 1 p.m. at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Md. on Saturday, May 16.
