College Of New Jersey Downs Hopkins, 6-2, At Baseball Regional
May 16, 2002 Boyertown, PA - The College of New Jersey designated hitter Gregory Martinez hit a grand slam to cap a six-run fifth inning and lead the sixth-seeded Lions to a 6-2 win over top-seeded Johns Hopkins in the first game of the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Baseball Regional Thursday afternoon. The Blue Jays will play the loser of today's Kean-Alvernia game in an elimination game Friday at 11 a.m., while the College of New Jersey will face the loser of today's DeSales-Worcester State game Friday at 3 p.m.
Hopkins starter Yani Rosenberg (Baltimore, MD/Gilman) cruised through the first four innings, allowing only two hits and two walks, and the Blue Jays scored single runs in the second and third to take a 2-0 lead into the fifth before the Lions came back.
Stephen Czajka led off the fifth with a single, Sergio Sencion followed with a bunt single, and Bryan Flynn drew a walk to load the bases with nobody out. After Rosenberg got Chris Shoonhoven to fly out to right field with no advancement by the runners, Bob Capaldo put the Lions on the board by drawing a walk. Colin Renwick tied the game with an RBI groundout to second base, and Rosenberg then hit Michael Kohri with a pitch to load the bases. Martinez followed with a grand slam to right center to put the College of New Jersey up by four. The Blue Jays tried to respond in the bottom of the fifth, as singles by senior second baseman Karl Sineath (West Chester, PA/West Chester Henderson) and senior center fielder Mike DePalma (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) put runners on the corners with one out, but Lions starting pitcher Brad Downs got senior first baseman Ben Taylor (Pawling, NY/Trinity-Pawling) to hit into a double play to end the threat. Downs then combined with reliever Nick Maddalena to hold Hopkins to just two walks and no hits over the final four innings to nail down the victory. Downs allowed just two runs and seven hits over 7.1 innings to pick up the win and improve to 3-1 this season, while Rosenberg fell to 9-1 and lost for the first time in 18 decisions. The Blue Jays took the lead in the bottom of the second, as sophomore left fielder Craig Cetta (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) opened the frame by tripling to right center and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior right fielder Joe Urban (Nanticoke, PA/Bishop Hoban). Hopkins went up 2-0 in the third, as Sineath singled to start the inning, stole second, advanced to third on a Jay Cieri (Pine Brook, NJ/Montville) sacrifice bunt, and scored on a single by DePalma. JHU had a chance to extend its lead when Cetta doubled to lead off the fourth, but he was stranded at third base. Sineath led the Blue Jays by going 3-for-4 with a run scored, while DePalma and Cetta each added two hits. Sophomore Matt Righter (Clarion, PA/Lawrenceville Prep) relieved Rosenberg and allowed just one hit in two scoreless innings for Hopkins. -30- |
