The Short Story: Haverford jumped to a 4-0 lead after three innings, pushed that margin to 7-1 after five and held off a late Johns Hopkins rally to claim the 2016 Centennial Conference baseball championship. The Fords rode the strong pitching performance of Grant Finn, who worked eight innings and allowed seven hits and three runs, two of which weren’t scored until the top of the ninth inning with the Fords holding a six-run lead.

Haverford scratched for single runs in the first and second innings before a two-run home run by Spencer Sohmer in the third doubled the lead to 4-0. Hopkins got one back in the top of the fourth on a solo home run by Dan Albert, but three unearned runs on one play in the bottom of the fifth pushed the Ford lead to 7-1 and Finn wasn’t in serious trouble until the ninth.

Down to its last at bat, the Blue Jays quickly got two runs back as an inning-opening walk by Alex Darwiche was followed by a two-run home run from Zach Jaffe; the home run chased Finn, who was relieved by George Hatamiya. Hatamiya worked himself into a save situation as he surrendered three singles and hit a batter as Hopkins drew within 7-4, but with the bases loaded and one out, he got Raul Shah to fly out to center and struck out Brian Lin to seal the win and the Fords’ third Centennial title in five years.
