Spiciarich Leads No. 6 Hopkins in 16-5 Rout of York

BALTIMORE, MD - Sophomore Mike Spiciarich (Syosset, NY/Chaminade) went 3-for-3 with two home runs to lead Johns Hopkins to a 16-5 win over visiting York College this afternoon in non-conference baseball action.
The Blue Jays, who finished their home schedule with a 14-1 mark, improved to 32-5 overall with their fourth consecutive win. York fell to 22-16 on the year.
The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Spiciarich answered with his first home run of the game, a solo shot to left center field, in the bottom of the inning to tie the score. York tallied two more runs in the top of the second to regain the lead at 3-1, but the Blue Jays would respond with seven runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead for good.
Junior Brian Morley (Tappan, NY/Don Bosco Prep) led of the second with a triple to the gap in right center. After a walk by sophomore Paul Long (Oklahoma City, OK/Heritage Hall), freshman Corey Gleason (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) drilled a three-run home run down the line in left field, his second of the season.
Following a walk by junior Doug Hitchner (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy) and singles by junior Rob Morrison (Malibu, CA/Loyola) and Spiciarich, sophomore Eric Nigro (Randolph, NJ/Taft Prep) laced a two-run double down the line in left to give JHU a 6-3 lead. Two batters later, freshman Gary Rosenberg (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) singled up the middle to score two more runs for an 8-3 advantage.
The Blue Jays continued their hot hitting in the third with three additional runs to increase the margin to 11-3. Spiciarich's second home run, a two-run drive to left field, highlighted the inning and was the 58th home run of the season for Hopkins, breaking the school mark of 57 set last year in 44 games. Spiciarich would finish the game with four runs and three runs batted in, while raising his batting average to .422 for the season.
York would get no closer than seven runs the rest of the contest as JHU tallied two runs in the fifth, one in the seventh and two in the eighth. Hopkins scored in double figures for the 15th time this season and improved to 19-1 in games decided by five runs or more.
Gleason finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs and four RBIs, while Rosenberg was 2-for-4 with three runs batted in and Nigro went 2-for-5 with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs. The Blue Jays totaled 18 hits in the game, including 10 for extra bases.
Junior Russ Berger (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) pitched the first two innings for the Blue Jays to improve to 7-0 on the year and 16-4 for his career. Freshmen Andrew Bail (Chicago, IL/Latin School) and Jason Thayer (Finksburg, MD/Westminster), sophomore Jason Hochfelder (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley), and juniors Adam Josephart (West Nyack, NYClarktown South) and Sven Stafford (Evanston, IL/Evanston) combined to allow just one earned run on four hits in seven innings of relief.
Scott Schlafer took the loss for the Spartans as he went three innings and allowed 11 runs on 11 hits. John-Paul Gallo was 3-for-3 with a run batted, while Erik Nilsen went 2-for-2 with a double, a home run and three runs batted in.
Hopkins concludes the regular season Friday as the Blue Jays travel to face Salisbury University at 3:00 p.m.
