May 7, 2002
YORK, Pa. - York College scored eight runs in the first two innings and held on for a 9-6 win over Johns Hopkins in non-conference baseball action this afternoon. The Blue Jays had their five-game winning streak snapped and conclude the regular season with a 34-7 record. The Spartans have won eight straight games and broke the school-record for wins as they improved to 29-10.
York got off to a solid start against Blue Jay starter Russ Berger (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) with three runs on five hits in the first. Matt Day opened the bottom of the second with a solo home run and the Spartans would add four more runs in the inning to take an 8-0 lead.
The Blue Jays cut the deficit to five with three runs in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Sven Stafford (Evanston, IL/Evanston) belted a solo home run, the first of his two on the day, to lead off the inning. Freshman Mike Durgala (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson) and sophomore Tim Casale (West Hempstead, NY/Chaminade) followed with singles before Durgala would score as sophomore Doug Hitchner (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy) reached on an error by the shortstop. Two batters later, sophomore Rob Morrison (Malibu, CA/Loyola) drove in Casale with a single to right field to cut the margin to 8-3.
Following a Travis Gaidos solo home run for York in the bottom of the sixth, Hopkins tallied two runs in the top of the eight to cut the Spartans lead to 9-5. Senior Mike DePalma (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) led of the frame with a single up the middle, one of his three hits on the day. With two outs and DePalma on second after a stolen base, Stafford hit his second homer of the day, and fifth of the season, to center field.
The Blue Jays added a run in the top of the ninth as DePalma drove in senior Ben Taylor (Pawling, NY/Trinity-Pawling) with a single up the middle, but were unable to make up the deficit. DePalma was 3-for-5 on the day with one run and one RBI, while Stafford went 2-for-4 with his first career two home run game.
Berger (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season as he allowed eight runs in 1.2 innings of work. Keith Falcone earned the win for York to improve to 3-3 as he held JHU to three runs on eight hits in seven innings.
The Blue Jays, winners of the Centennial Conference, will next be in action at the 2002 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament on Thursday, May 16. Final seedings for the tournament will be decided on Sunday, May 12.
