Blue Jays Take Second-Place in Spartan Classic May 7, 2001
YORK, PA - The Johns Hopkins baseball team dropped its final two games of the weekend to finish 2-2 and in second-place at the York College Spartan Classic. The Blue Jays fell to York 4-3 in extra innings in the championship game after posting a 2-1 record in round-robin play. Hopkins finished the regular season with a 31-12 record having won nine of its past 12 games.
In JHU's first game of the tournament, freshman George Merrell
(Bloomsburg, PA/Central Columbia) led the team to a 9-0 victory over
SUNY-Farmingdale as he tossed a complete game allowing just three hits and
two walks. Merrell improved to 4-0 on the season. Offensively, sophomore
Joe Urban (Nanticoke, PA/Bishop Hoban) and juniors Ben Taylor (Pawling,
NY/Trinity Pawling) and John Krivonak (Canfield, OH/Canfield) each totaled
two hits. Urban and senior J.R. Taylor (Gainesville, FL/Eastside) each
added two runs batted in.
Senior Karl Sineath (West Chester, PA/West Chester Henderson) went 4-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs to lead Hopkins to an 8-6 win against York in JHU's second game of the tournament. Sineath had two doubles and added two stolen bases, while Joe Urban was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Junior Brett Gutterman (New York, NY/Collegiate) earned his fifth victory of the year with five innings of work. The Blue Jays fell to Suffolk 12-10 in extra innings in the final round-robin game on Sunday morning. JHU had a 10-6 lead through six innings, but was unable to hold the advantage as Suffolk came back to force extra innings. J.R. Taylor led the team going 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs, and Ben Taylor added three hits and two RBIs. Freshman Luke Rezeli (Stafford, VA/Brooke Point) suffered the loss for Hopkins and fell to 4-3 on the year. J.R. Taylor set a new school-record for doubles in a single season as he smacked his 19th of the year. JHU matched up with York in the championship game and again fell in extra innings as York scored in the bottom of the eighth to win 4-3. Junior Neal Lynch (Hopewell, NJ/Notre Dame) pitched a complete game for JHU and suffered his first loss of the season. Joe Urban led the offense with three hits in four at-bats, including his sixth home run of the year and second of the tournament. Ben Taylor added three hits for Hopkins. The Blue Jays will next be in action in the NCAA Division III Regional Championships beginning on May 16. JHU has reached the NCAA Tournament for the ninth time under head coach Bob Babb and for the third time in the last five seasons.
