May 3, 2003
BALTIMORE, MD - Sophomore Mike Durgala (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson) was 2-for-4 with a home run and four runs batted in to lead the Johns Hopkins baseball team past Muhlenberg, 9-2, in the first game of the three-game Centennial Conference Championship series Saturday afternoon at Johns Hopkins.
Senior Jeremy Brown (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh School) struck out nine batters in his fifth complete game as the Blue Jays improved to 30-5 on the season with their 13th win in the last 14 games. JHU reached 30 wins for the ninth time in school history. The Mules fell to 21-13-1 on the year and will serve as the home team in the second game of the series Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
Hopkins jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Durgala drilled a two-run home run to left field, his 10th of the season, but the Mules responded with two runs in the top of the next inning to tie the game at 2-2. C.J. Kessler walked to lead off the inning and Ryan Jaxheimer followed with a single before Joel Rush smacked a double to center field to drive in both runners.
The Blue Jays answered with a run in the bottom of the second to take the lead for good as sophomore Paul Long (Oklahoma City, OK/Heritage Hall) singled and scored three batters later on a single by junior Doug Hitchner (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy).
JHU added six runs over the next five innings to set the final margin of 9-2. Senior Joe Urban (Nanticoke, PA/Bishop Hoban) drove in a run with a double to deep center, junior Craig Cetta (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) crushed his sixth home run of the season, a solo shot to left field, and Durgala drove in two more runs with a single in the eighth.
Brown improved to 7-2 as he allowed two runs on seven hits for his fourth straight win. He has struck out 34 batters in his last three starts, a total of 25 innings. Aaron Regensburg suffered the loss for Muhlenberg to fall to 3-4 as he gave up seven runs on nine hits in seven innings.
Cetta was 2-fr-5 with two runs, while Long went 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs and sophomore Paul Winterling (Glenelg, MD/McDonogh School) recorded a triple and three runs scored. Rush finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs batted in and a double, while Ben Carr added two hits in five at-bats for the Mules.
Muhlenberg, which rallied for four runs in the ninth inning to defeat McDaniel, 7-6, in the opening game of the tournament on Friday, came back from a 5-3 deficit to top No. 2 seed Ursinus in Saturday's first game.
The Mules opened the scoring in the top of the second as Matt Long singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Rush. Muhlenberg added a run in the fourth as Long singled and scored on a two-out single from Adam Sadler, but Ursinus cut the margin to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning as Jon Sheppard singled and scored on a single up the middle by Ted Piotrowicz.
Muhlenberg tallied a single run in the fifth to take a 3-1 advantage, but the Bears answered in the bottom of the seventh as Jason Marakovits belted a grand slam to left field to give Ursinus a 5-3 lead.
The lead would not last as Muhlenberg struck for three runs in the top of the next inning. Rush led off with a walk and Sadler drilled a two-run home run to left field to tie the game at 5-5. With one out, Justin Graf singled to left and advanced to second on a groundout by Justin Rubenstein. Graf then stole third and scored the game-winning run on a single by Carr.
