Box Score

Baltimore, MD - The top-ranked Johns Hopkins baseball team capped a perfect conference regular season mark with an 8-4 comeback win over Dickinson Wednesday afternoon.

The Blue Jays, who improved to 34-1 overall and 18-0 in the league, became the first team in Centennial Conference history to go unbeaten through the league's regular season schedule. The Red Devils, who will be the fourth seed in this weekend's conference tournament, fell to 13-21-1 overall and 10-7-1 in the league.

Dickinson took the early lead as Tre Dwinell led off the game with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bryan MacPhail. The Red Devils then added two runs in the second inning to go up 3-0. Greg Terebetski led off the frame and reached on an error by sophomore Corey Gleason (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton). After a sacrifice bunt by Phil Newman moved Terebetski to second, Andrew Burger singled him home and advanced to second on an error by senior Craig Cetta (Randolph, NJ/Randolph). After a hit batter, Dwinell singled home Burger to give Dickinson a three-run advantage.

The Blue Jays began to claw back in the third, as senior Bryan Eberle (Frederick, MD/Urbana) led off with a double and senior Tim Casale (West Hempstead, NY/Chaminade) followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Senior Rob Morrison (Malibu, CA/Loyola) then reached on a fielder's choice to drive home junior Mike Spiciarich (Syosset, NY/Chaminade), who was pinch-running for Eberle, and after junior Eric Nigro (Randolph, NJ/Taft Prep) singled, Morrison scored on a double by junior Paul Winterling (Glenelg, MD/McDonogh) to make it a 3-2 game.

However, the Red Devils would get a run back in the top of the fourth. Dwinell singled with one out, stole second and moved to third when Eberle's throw went into centerfield. He then scored on a ground out by MacPhail.

Eberle walked with one out in the bottom of the frame and Spiciarich, again pinch-running, moved to second on a wild pitch. After a walk to Casale, Morrison singled home Spiciarich, and Nigro followed with a walk to load the bases. Winterling then walked to tie the game at 4-4 after four innings.

The Blue Jays took their first lead of the game in the sixth as Morrison led off with a bunt single, stole second, advanced to third on a fly out by Nigro and scored on a single by Winterling. Hopkins then put the game away with three runs in the eighth.

Senior Doug Hitchner (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy) led off with a single and was pinch-ran for by Spiciarich, who moved to second when Morrison walked. Spiciarich then advanced to third when Nigro flew out, and he scored while Morrison went to third on a double by Winterling. Senior Brian Morley (Tappan, NY/Don Bosco Prep) followed with a two-run double to put the Blue Jays up four.

Junior Ryan McConnell (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) threw three hitless innings of relief to pick up the win and improve to 6-0 on the season, while sophomore Jason Thayer (Finksburg, MD/Westminster) struck out four in two perfect innings of work.

Jamie King allowed three runs on four hits in three innings of relief for the Red Devils while falling to 0-3 on the year.

Winterling finished 3-for-4 with four runs batted in, while Morrison was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Casale and Gleason each also had two hits for the Blue Jays, who won despite committing six errors.

Hopkins will host the conference tournament for the third straight year this weekend, playing in the best-of-three championship. The Blue Jays begin their quest for a fourth consecutive league title Saturday at 3:30 p.m. and will play again Sunday at 12 noon.
