Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD - Behind four home runs, including two from sophomore catcher Joe Borrelli (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) the #13 Johns Hopkins baseball team defeated York College of Pennsylvania 14-5 on Thursday afternoon in Baltimore, MD. The Blue Jays (29-4) won their 12th straight contest as they scored at least one run in each of the first six innings of the contest.

For the ninth straight game, Hopkins jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning. Senior third baseman Todd Emr (Westwood, NJ/Saddle River Day) knocked a two-out two run home run over the right field fence for a 2-0 lead.

Hopkins extended its lead in the bottom of the second as Borrelli drove a ball over the right field fence for the first home run of his career. The Blue Jays led 4-0 after two innings of play.

The Blue Jays got two more runs in the bottom of the third to lead 6-0 after three innings of play. On the mound Blue Jay starter Dave Fioretti (Huntington, NY/St. Anthony's) was working his way through the Spartan order, allowing just two hits through the first four innings.

Hopkins put five more runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth to lead 11-0. Borrelli had his second home run of the game, again going to right field. Senior center fielder Rob Pietroforte (Brooklyn, NY/Berkeley Carroll) and sophomore right fielder Brian Youchak (Pittsburgh, PA/Vincentian Academy) each had RBI doubles in the inning while senior first baseman Matt Benchener (Newtown, PA/Holy Ghost Prep) had an RBI single.

In the fifth inning, Hopkins got its four home run of the day as sophomore Brendan Walsh (La Jolla, CA/The Bishop's School) had a two run home run to right field.

The Blue Jays capped their scoring with a single run in the sixth inning.

On the hill, the Blue Jay pitching staff was continuing to take care of business as York had just one runner reach second base through the first eight innings of play.

The Spartans finally got on the board with five runs in the top of the ninth. Mike Santoro, Steve Pokopec, Chris Young, C.T. Stanley and Steve Bonitatibus all had RBI singles in the inning.

Fioretti went the first four innings for the Blue Jays and picked up his second victory of the season as he allowed just two hits. Five pitchers followed him to the mound as the pitcher by committee approach meant no one went more then one inning. Matt Austin took the loss for York as he falls to 3-3 after giving up 11 runs in four innings.

Borrelli finished the day 2-for-2 with four RBIs and three runs scored, as Youchak was 2-for-2 as well with three runs scored and one RBI. Pietroforte went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI while Emr was 1-for-2 with a run scored and three RBIs. Benchener and Walsh each had two RBIs for the Blue Jays in the contest.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, April 26 when it hosts Haverford College in a Centennial Conference doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for 12:30 p.m.
