Pietroforte and Margve Lead #13 Hopkins over Montclair State, 12-3
April 22, 2008
LITTLE FALLS, NJ - Senior center fielder Rob Pietroforte (Brooklyn, NY/Berkeley Carroll) tied the JHU career triples record and helped lift the #13 Johns Hopkins baseball team to a 12-3 win over Montclair State on Tuesday night. Senior catcher Tony Margve (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) had a first inning home run to help the Blue Jays (28-4) win their 11th straight game.
The Blue Jays wasted little time in getting things started as sophomore right fielder Brian Youchak (Pittsburgh, PA/Vincentian Academy) reached on a one-out error in the first and stole second. After the Red Hawks got the second out of the frame, senior third baseman Todd Emr (Westwood, NJ/Saddle River Day) coaxed a walk to put two men on. Margve then stepped up and ripped a home run over the left field fence to give Hopkins a 3-0 lead before Montclair State got an at bat.
Montclair State reached Blue Jay starter Brian Duddie (San Diego, CA/Mt. Carmel) for two runs in the bottom of the third inning to make it a 3-2 game. Rob Bowness had an RBI single to score Michael Nunes and a bases loaded walk to Robert Clark forced in a second run.
In the top of the fifth, the first two Blue Jays reached before Pietroforte ripped a triple to right center to plate both runners. Pietroforte's triple was his second of the season and 13th of his career, tying the JHU career record. Pietroforte would come home on an RBI single off the bat of Emr in the inning.
The Blue Jays would add to their lead in the sixth with three more runs. Senior DH Matt Benchener (Newtown, PA/Holy Ghost Prep) had an RBI single that scored two in the inning. The other run came as junior first baseman Ryan Biner (Crystal Lake, IL/Prairie Ridge) was hit by a pitch with the bases juiced to force in a run.
Montclair State would add a run in the bottom of the eighth before Hopkins got two more runs in the top of the ninth to make the final score 12-3.
Duddie picked up his fifth win of the season after throwing the first three innings of the contest. He surrendered two runs on four hits with five strikeouts. The Blue Jays used a pitcher by committee approach in the contest as six pitchers combined to throw the final six innings allowing just one run on two hits during that stretch. D. J. Cunningham took the loss for Montclair as he surrendered six runs on seven hits in four innings.
Pietroforte finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. He has now hit in 19 straight games for the Blue Jays. Youchak and Emr each extended their hit streaks in the contest. Youchak has now hit in 14 straight after going 2-for-5 with three runs scored. Emr has an 11-game hit streak as he went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Margve was 1-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored while Benchener went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Hopkins is back in action on Thursday, April 24 when it hosts York College of Pennsylvania at 3:30 p.m.
