April 16, 2008
BALTIMORE, MD - Behind a season-high in runs scored and hits the #15 Johns Hopkins baseball team rolled to a 27-4 win over Washington College in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays (24-4, 12-1 CC) won their seventh straight contest after scoring the most runs in a game since the 2003 season when Hopkins beat Washington 32-2.
Hopkins got things started in the first inning as they posted four runs in the bottom of the frame. Washington got one of those runs back in the third as Kirk Hines walked to lead off the inning and came around to score on Ben Kaplan's RBI groundout.
The Blue Jays broke the game open with seven runs in the bottom of the third as they sent 11 men to the plate in the inning. Hopkins got RBI hits from senior third baseman Todd Emr (Westwood, NJ/Saddle River Day), junior first baseman Ryan Biner (Crystal Lake, IL/Prairie Ridge), sophomore second baseman Lee Bolyard (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) and sophomore right fielder Brian Youchak (Pittsburgh, PA/Vincentian Academy).
The Hopkins' bats went right back to work in the bottom of the fourth as 10 batters went to the plate and six runs went up on the scoreboard. Bolyard had a two-out two run home run to right in the inning while senior center fielder Rob Pietroforte (Brooklyn, NY/Berkeley Carroll) plated two with an RBI double. The Blue Jays capped their scoring in the inning on Emr's two-run single.
Sophomore Chris Huisman (Davidsonville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) hit his first career home run in the fifth inning to make it a 19-1 game after five innings of play.
Washington got three runs in the top of the sixth before Hopkins answered with two more in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 21-4 game.
Hopkins capped the scoring with six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. The big hit in the inning came as junior third baseman Dave Garber (Mount Joy, PA/Donegal) hit a grand slam over the right field fence.
Junior right-hander Dave Fioretti (Huntington, NY/St. Anthony's) picked up his first win of the season after throwing four innings and surrendering just one run with four strikeouts. The Blue Jays used a pitcher by committee approach in the contest with five hurlers following Fioretti to the mound and no one else going more the one inning. The loss went to A.J. Hill who surrendered four runs in the first inning.
The Blue Jays finished the day with 24 hits as 18 different players recorded at least one base knock in the contest. Emr went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs. Bolyard finished the day 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored including the home run. Biner went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Youchak was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI as senior catcher Tony Margve (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) had an identical line to Youchak.
Hopkins returns to action on Friday, April 18 when it completes the series with Dickinson College. First pitch in Carlisle, PA is set for 3:30 p.m.
