Box Score

WESTMINSTER, MD - Sophomore Mike Durgala (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson) hit a two-run home run and drove in five runs to lead the Johns Hopkins baseball team past McDaniel, 15-3, in a battle of the top two teams in the Centennial Conference this afternoon in Westminster.

The Blue Jays, who improved to 19-4 overall and 7-2 in the Centennial, totaled 21 hits and scored in double figures for the 11th time this season a day after scoring a school-record 32 runs in a win over Washington College. Hopkins has averaged 12.7 runs over its last 10 games to increase its season average to 10.2 runs per contest. McDaniel lost for just the second time in 12 conference games to fall to 14-5-1 overall and 9-2-1 in league play.

McDaniel scored a single run in first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead, but Hopkins roared back with a seven-run third inning. Following a single by senior Joe Urban (Nanticoke, PA/Bishop Hoban) and a walk by junior Doug Hitchner (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy), senior Jay Cieri (Pine Brook, NJ/Montville) drilled his first triple of the season into the gap in right-center field to tie the game at two.

Cieri then scored as sophomore Mike Spiciarich (Syosset, NY/Chaminade) reached on an error by the shortstop, and sophomore Paul Winterling (Glenelg, MD/McDonogh School) followed with his team-leading 10th home run of the season to left field. Winterling, who hit three home runs and drove in 11 runs against Washington on Monday, is now tied for fifth on the JHU single-season list and needs two to move into third place.

The Blue Jays were not done in the inning as junior Craig Cetta (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) doubled to left field and Durgala belted a two-run home run to left-center field to give JHU a 7-2 advantage. The home run was Durgala's eighth of the season and second in two games.

Freshman Corey Gleason (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) increased Hopkins' lead with an RBI double down the line in left field, his sixth double of the year. McDaniel tallied a single run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Blue Jays scored seven runs over the final three innings to put the game out of reach.

In the seventh, Spiciarich and Winterling scored on a double by Durgala, who would then score on a single by Urban. Cetta drove in junior Tim Casale (West Hempstead, NY/Chaminade) with a single and Durgala was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the eight for a 13-3 lead. JHU capped the scoring in the ninth as junior Bryan Eberle (Frederick, MD/Urbana) singled and scored on a double by sophomore Eric Nigro (Randolph, NJ/Taft Prep), who would later score on a single from freshman Gary Rosenberg (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield).

Junior Sven Stafford (Evanston, IL/Evanston) tied his career-high with his third win of the season. He allowed three runs on six hits in six innings and recorded one strikeout. Junior Matt Righter (Clarion, PA/Lawrenceville Prep) pitched a scoreless final three innings to earn his second save of the season. He gave up just one hit and struck out two while lowering his ERA to 2.14 for the year.

Dave Roberts fell to 2-2 for McDaniel as he gave up eight runs on nine hits in 3.1 innings. Chris Seibert was 4-for-4 with an RBI triple for the Green Terror, while Ryan Shotzberger added a run and a hit.

Hopkins returns to action Wednesday as the Blue Jays play host to Villa Julie College in a non-conference contest at 3:00 p.m.
