Box Score

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Junior Mike Spiciarich went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs and the top-ranked Johns Hopkins baseball team got all the offense it would need in a six-run second inning as the Blue Jays rolled past host Washington College, 13-3 Tuesday afternoon. Hopkins improves to 21-0 on the year (6-0 in the Centennial Conference), 34-1 in its last 35 regular season games and 55-7 since the beginning of the 2003 season. The Shoremen sliped to 5-16, 0-8.

The Blue Jays put up the six-spot in the second inning to take control of the game early. Senior catched Doug Hitchner's RBI double plated Craig Cetta and senior Tim Casale tripled home a pair of runs to quickly make it 3-0. Spiciarich and sophomore Corey Gleason both added RBI singles and Spiciarich later scored on a sacrifice fly by Eric Nigro to account for the other three runs in the inning.

Spiciarich scored Hopkins' lone run in the fourth inning and added an RBI double in a two-run fifth inning to help build the lead to 9-0 after five innings. Senior Jeremy Brown worked the first five innings on the mound for the Blue Jays to earn the win. He allowed just three hits and struck out five, while walking just two to improve to 5-0 on the year.

After the Blue Jays pushed the lead to 10-0 with a run in the top of the seventh, Washington got on the board with a three-run eighth. A John Schmidt RBI double plated Jordan Lange and a two-run double by Jim Barossi two batters later accounted for the three Shoremen runs. The three runs were the first given up this season by Johns Hopkins senior Sven Stafford, who had thrown 10 scoreless innings of relief before getting tagged for four hits and the three runs in two innings of work.

The Blue Jays closed out the scoring with three runs in the top of the ninth. Senior Carl Ippolito's RBI single and senior Rob Morrison's two-run single highlighted the inning for the Blue Jays, who have scored 10 or more runs in each of their last three games and nine times overall this season.

In addition to Spiciarich's three-hits, the Blue Jays also got two hits from Ippolito, Gleason and senior Brian Morley, who also scored a game-high four runs. Casale had three RBIs in the win, while Morrison, Nigro and Spiciarich had two apiece.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Thursday when the Blue Jays host Mary Washington at 3::30 pm.
